Thread: Old skool question (Kane, EPMD, BDP)

  1. #1

Default Old skool question (Kane, EPMD, BDP)

what's your favorite Big Daddy Kane, EPMD & Boogie Down Productions album? there's a lot of seminal classics here ... but if you had to pick one album from each catalogue?

would like to hear your input, I've been on a bit of an old school binge lately and am always interested in other people's opinions

it had been a long ass time since I listened to some of these albums

    peace

out of these three artists BDP is the one that I have all their albums in my collection and have listened to all LP:s many, many, many times. "Criminal Minded" manages to captures a time, a place and a specific sound and aside from the huge influence it had on later hip hop, it's filled with slamming beats and rhymes. 5/5 classic all the way; "By All Means Necessary" continues on a similiar vibe and while it doesn't reach quite the same peak as a body of work, it's an undeniably DOPE album... "Ghetto Music" and "Edutainment" has it's moments but they never really captured me to have me revisiting them very often..

"SEX & VIOLENCE" is where it's at it though - INCREDIBLY UNDERRATED ALBUM!!!! One of the hidden gems of hip-hop as it finds KRS in a crossroad between the late '80s sound of his BDP work and the future of "Return Of The Boom Bap". And it's all out hardcore, back to the "Criminal Minded" style while bringing some knowledge to the table.. contains some of the rawest diss tracks of all time.

I bet ya'll didn't know Fatlip of The Pharcyde sampled BDP's My Philosophy song on What's Up Fatlip song. He sampled KRS One's voice when he said what do you expect when you rhyme like a soft punk. Fatlip's lyrics made me laugh and the video is funny hahahahahahahahahahaha. NWA also sampled My Philosophy on Gangsta Gangsta song when KRS One said it's not about a salary, it's all about reality. Black Moon sampled My Philosophy on How Many MC's song when KRS One said how many mc's must get dissed. I love How Many MC's and the video is hard. I got Black Moon's Enta Da Stage album that has that song. Claaa7, what's up with a new Black Moon album? They came out with a single this past summer i think or last year. It's been 12 years since their last album Total Eclipse which wasn't that good LOL.
