Thread: What wu album would you recommend to non hiphop listeners?

  1. #1

Default What wu album would you recommend to non hiphop listeners?

I was thinking that particular album wouldn't necessarily have to represent the wu sound to the fullest, but would act more like a bridge between their regular music tastes & hiphop/the wu. sort of like 'easing into the wu'

of course it would be easy to argue for the quintessential wu record, 'Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers' since it's what wu is all about and how it all got started but that's not the argument I'm making here

these would be people who have no interest in technical skills, like internal rhyming, flow etc that regular hiphop fans pay attention to

so personally I was thinking of Ghost & BadBadNotGood's 'Sour Soul'. sonically it's very rich with it's live instrumentation, and not just on the actual instrumental interludes. it gives off a Sunday morning listening music in parts (at least to me). I wouldn't go as far as calling it easy listening but you catch my drift. some instrumentals remind me of 60s music (like 'Ray Gun'). and ghost's got an engaging voice that easily conveys emotions. the verses themselves are pretty short, not very technical and in general don't require much paying attention to. in fact it's a pretty short record all around

alternatively I was thinking of Ghost's 'Wizard Of Poetry' album cuz of its themes involving love, the female vocalists etc. on there. the raps are pretty easy to follow too

I have 2 more suggestions but I'll post them later since I'd like to hear your input first

so what would be the one album you would recommend to non hiphop fans to give them just a taste of the wu, a record that they might actually play through? maybe multiple times even it could be a killa bee album too. really interested in your thoughts

    peace

Personally I think Wizard is awful but it's all about opinions. I know a non hiphop head that got into Wu through Wu Forever. That was me.

I'd suggest that, or Liquid Swords.

It most certainly is, I would recommend Heavy Mental and a most recently updated volume of encyclopedias as well so that they can look up the many references on there as well.

    hmmm interesting.

like New Hills 36 said i was once i non hip hop fan/racist and the album that did it for me was Enter the Wu-Tang.

but jacobjay your question can be tackled many different ways, also digging the Billy Joel tip you seem to be on.

if i wanted to get my grandma into the Wu i would definitely start with Sour Soul

ive noticed that a lot of hardcore/deathcore bands list ODB as an influence in their liner notes so if they were a lead head Return to the 36 is what i would recommend

you make a valid point for Wizard

but if i had to break it down and list what i personally think it would be like this...

it all depends on what the person already listens to

the most holiest of christians/religious people that hate hip hop/have no clue about it, i would recommend Heavy Mental or Planet of the Gods like DDD said

thats the thing about wu they got something for everyone.

but me being me id recommend Bobby Digital in Stereo any day of the week. and if they dont like it, id ask why? and start pointing shit out/explaining lines/rhyme schemes to them

Blue Sky Black Death presents Holocaust also, but only to very open minded people, Holocaust is just too abstract for the common listener..

Up until last year I would have said Birth of a Prince, since several of my friends liked it back when it dropped. But now I would recommend the two Black Knights x Frusciante joints.

    Peace.

Ghost Dog and Afro Samurai OSTs as well as Chamber Music might work too.

    Peace.
