The US to host North American OutGames for the first time
St. Louis will play host to a major event this spring, becoming the first American city to house the North America Outgames.
The event is a week-long festival of sports, human rights, and cultural events hosted by the LGBTQ community. Similar to the Olympics, the North America Outgames will begin on May 27, and is expected to bring more than 3,000 people to the city.
The games will take place throughout the area, but Union Station will act as Athlete’s Village, similar to the Olympic Village.
The event is projected to bring in between $2-3 million for the local economy. St. Louis was chosen as the first U.S. site because it’s an accessible city and friendly to the gay community.
“We are a very friendly and open city from our government down to our community members,” said Sarah Kline, a managing partner at Team St. Louis, a non-profit organization that aims to educate the GLSBT community about various methods of promoting general health and the benefits of competitive sports. “We really are striving to make this a family friendly event.”
While The Outgames are focused on the LGBTQ community, anyone can participate. The games will run from May 27-June 4.
