Gingers by the thousands flock to Irish Redhead Convention
Redheads constitute only about a half-a-percent of humanity. But the fire-haired and freckle-faced will outnumber the citizens of tiny Crosshaven, Ireland when 2,500 gingers and their cohorts descend on the quaint, seaside village for the Seventh Annual Irish Redhead Convention.
From Europe, the States, Australia and points beyond they gather to compete for the honor of being named owners of the world’s greatest red beards, eyebrows and dogs. There are tugs of war pitting gingers vs. non-gingers, carrot-tossing, freckle-counting, redheaded farmers shearing sheep that have been dyed red. This will mark the first year the winners will be announced for the coveted MOGO (Music of Ginger Origins) Awards.
Ireland has the second-highest concentration of redheads in the world with a 10-percent ginger constituency. Scotland has 13 percent.
"We are the leading consumers of sunscreen. One day Banana Boat or L'Oreal will realize this opportunity is gold," said Joleen, ever on the watch for corporate sponsors.
