Thread: RIP Leonard Cohen

    Default RIP Leonard Cohen

Over time I learned to appreciate his monotonous voice. He was my mother's favorite singer.

I saw him in concert around 2011, in open air in a historic setting. It was fantastic.

He released a new album recently.

At his age he was still obliged to go on long world tours and record (excellent) new albums cuz his former manager stole all of his money
    Retired.

He was more than a singer / songwriter. He was a straight up musical talent that in this day and age is sorely missing.

Not only his talent, but one of his favourite places in the world is my hometown of sligo in Ireland where he wanted to play for decades because of people like W.B Yeats and Spike Milligan, so when he finally got to play in the historic Lissadel House in Sligo the crowds were beyond anything I have ever seen and I never seen my father (who is a huge Cohen fan) and the rest of my family as proud and as happy to witness a historic concert and see their hero live.

The utmost utmost respect for what he done for music and what he respected and loved about the oppressed poetry of the people of Ireland and specifically my home town of sligo.

    RIP

This dude was a true wordsmith. Pretty unlikely for somebody who writes hip hop lyrics with a completely different structure to what Leonard wrote, but he is actually one of my biggest influences as a lyricist. Actually probably my biggest because I'm not really influenced by other people much at all.

Avalanche is probably my favourite lyric of all thyme. That ambiguous, dark shit captivates me. I analyse that lyric every thyme I hear that song.

But yeah, dude was one of a kind. He lay down some nice fingerstyle compositions on that nylon string acoustic too. I watched a live version of Avalanche recently where he played a fantastic moody guitar accompaniment to his croaky vocal. Spine tingling shit.

I have his discog but haven't worked up to his later albums yet, but I love those early ones. I think they're a must for any serious music collection.

RIP Leonard Cohen. Thanks for the priceless contribution you made to music.

^what's funny as a hip-hop fan and how the genre is perceived as 'poetic' when I have never thought the genre really was poetic.

It isn't until you hear artists like leonard that you understand poetry within music and how pathetic a lot of rap is.

I remember he wanted to play Lissadel House in Sligo for years, and when he finally got to it was as much a novelty for him ad it was his fans.

There are only a small handful of hip hop artists who impress me as lyricists. Like maybe 4 or 5, lolz. 99% of hip hop lyrics are completely disposable to me. But that's a discussion for another thread.

Leonard Cohen had a gift with words. He had an understanding of language incomparable to what rappers do.
