Default Scarface 3rd remake coming 2018

Giorgio Moroder’s score notwithstanding, Brian De Palma’s 1983 version of Scarface was always a bad idea—a sensationalized, extremely bloated remake of one of definitive gangster movies, with a glazed, hammy Al Pacino in the lead role. (Fortunately, both De Palma and Pacino made up for Scarface’s sins with Carlito’s Way, a genuinely great film.) And remaking De Palma’s version is an even worse idea in light of the current political situation, seeing as its protagonist, Tony Montana, is a two-for-one special of modern-day nationalist bogeymen: a dangerously un-vetted refugee and a murderous Latino stereotype.

But, hey, Scarface remains popular, and it’s not like Universal gets to collect royalties on all those rap lyrics and unlicensed beach towels. The studio has been trying to get the remake project going since at least 2011, and last year attached Antoine Fuqua—a specialist in turning titles audiences recognize into movies they won’t remember—to direct. But Fuqua dropped out last month, and while the studio is looking for a new director, it’s handed the screenplay over to Joel and Ethan Coen to polish. As Variety reports, the sibling duo will be doing the latest rewrite on the script, which was previously in the hands of Terence Winter and, before that, David Ayer.

As of now, Diego Luna remains attached to star as Tony Montana, with an expected release date of August 10, 2018.

Wouldn't this be the 2nd remake??

I think the writer of this article was being facetious.

    It's the 2nd remake, the 1st was De Palma's.

Is the 1983 even a remake? It's been a while since I've seen the old black and white movie but they were pretty far off from each other IIRC even though there was some borrowing/homage

It's a similar concept with certain plots but totally different era prohibition vs cocaine, /Cuban 30s/80s. ruthless gangsters with a soft spot for their sister. A lot of it is based on Al Capone and 20s Chicago.

I'm not sure what other direction they could go.

The remake was true to what a remake should be, i.e. A modernized setting with more modern filmmaking 50 years later and a lot of cultural changes in crime.

I don't know what all that much has changed in 30 years. I don't think another remake works
Although they said it was neither a sequel or remake.

    The original is great.

It's like Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower and the Jimi Hendrix version.

I'll pass on a Scarface remake LOL. I didn't even know there was a original before the one with Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrotonio. Al and Michelle did another movie called Frankie And Johnny. They worked at a restaurant as a cook and waitress. They fell in love. Check out Mary in The Color Of Money with Paul Newman(RIP), Tom Cruise, John Turturro and Forest Whitaker if ya'll haven't seen it. It's about shooting pool. It's directed by Martin Scorsese. Mary and Forest did another movie with Kevin Kline and Kevin Spacey. I forgot the name of it but it's good. Kevin Spacey was crazy LOL.

The movie with Kevin Kline, Kevin Spacey, Mary Elizabeth Mastrotonio and Forest Whitaker is called Consenting Adults. Kevin Kline and Mary were married. Kevin Kline had sex with another woman who he thought was Kevin Spacey's wife LOL. The lights weren't on in the bedroom when he got in the bed with her. So he just figured it was Kevin Spacey's wife LOL. Kevin Spacey told him he wanted him to have sex with his wife LOL. Just check out the movie if you haven't seen it because it's good. Kevin Spacey's wife ends up dead and Kevin Kline got arrested for it. Forest is a cop who arrested him.
