A 42-year-old man fatally shot on Staten Island was just paces from his home when he was hit, officials said Saturday.
A pair of men opened fire on Keith Keita on rainswept Kalver Place near Morningstar Road in Elm Park about 8:45 p.m. Friday, officials said.
Keita, who lived just down the block, was blasted once in the left side of the chest, officials said. Medics rushed him to Richmond University Medical Center, where he died.
Witnesses who remember hearing at least two shots spotted two men in dark hoodies running to a getaway vehicle.
Detectives were trying to pin down a motive for the killing Saturday, officials said. There were no immediate arrests.
Keita had been arrested 21 times in the city since 1993, mostly for minor offenses like driving without a licence, drug possession and assault. His last arrest in New York was in 2007, cops said.
In recent years he’d been moving around in Texas, where he was arrested in 2008 for drug possession and several motor vehicle violations, officials said.
Keita was a construction worker who leaves behind two children. His mother, Comfort Keita, 69, said her son, a father of a boy and a girl, had a caring soul. “He loved everybody,” she said, struggling to hold back sobs. “He would take the shirt off his back for anyone. That was Keith.”
