Default Artistically, the West Coast has it right now

I feel like the west coast stopped caring about the rest of the country and is better off for it. Between Kendrick, Vince Staples, TDE, Odd Future etc theyvery really created a world for themselves and are shitting on the rest of the country in lyrics, albums, originality, themes, and no retardedness (except Tyler the creator).

The south and east have nothing and what little they have from time to time on the east gets dismissed and squashed by its 53 year old gate keepers and gossip bloggers.

The east has Grizelda which is really the only label making that grimey hip hop that I love. The west just like the rest of hip hop has devolved since the hip hop hey days of the 90's. better artists, way better production back then. BeatMakers like dre, cold 187um, dj quik, dj mugs, ant banks just made a sound so dope and unique, I can't say the same about production. Today's west coast artist are different in image for sure, but I find the music is just boring, and the beats all sound the same, same generic keyboard noises, same 808 baselines. Kendrick does nothing for me. His beats are so/so, his voice is annoying, his raps are decent. I seriously don't get the hype. Same with Vince staples. A lot of hip hop now just sounds like junior varsity shit compared to the classics. I'd rather put in the old freestyle fellowship or above the law or the countless other greats than listen to the watered down beats and lyrics of today's artists.

I've been listening to a lot of west coast rap lately.

    Kendrick Lamar and TDE
    Nipsey Hussle
    YG
    Anderson .Paak if he counts.

I gave GKMC a re-listen and appreciate kendrick more now, though yeah, I thought he was over rated too. Vincent Staples has to find his own voice

As far as the east coast, I only listen to stuff that's trying to be in the industry or in it. For one it's just not hip hop to be content making music for friends and family and two I worry that I'll get unto their music and they'll stop the next year which happens. I also think the people trying to sound underground aren't contribution anything to the culture outside of rehashing wutang's style.

I think Staples definitely has his own voice, he has a tougher style than other west coast artists and he raps on more experimental beats. To me hes one of the best rappers right now.

G Pericos LP 'All Blue' is a good west coast LP from this year, but yeah theres lots.

^i think it's pretty much just about who u know. It's well documented I checked out of hip hop many years ago, but from what I have heard I generally get into home grown stuff a lot more than signed artists. Home grown music is generally a lot better than the shit signed artists r putting out. Especially beat wise. Dudes like noguano, boppers, soup bone...their beats absolutely shit on the stuff u hear official releases. I was thinking about that yesterday n wondered how much it has to do with not having to worry about clearing samples n shit.

It's same with dudes like Holocaust. You hear the beats he rhymes over, which r made by absolute nobodies (referring mostly to the in the end n hell's winter joints), and they absolutely destroy the shit u hear on well known rapper's albums.

I've hardly heard any beats in the last decade that I thought were exceptional, other than dozens upon dozens of joints by unsigned dudes.

That marcberg joint I thought was one album from more recent years that had some really great beats on it.

Artist's figuring they can make a killing off rappers that use their samples fucked everything up. That might be an advantage for someone that's unsigned and wants to stay that way.

I never hear 'underground' rappers that are remotely interesting, and their low amnotions already tells me messing with them will be a waste of time. For example Holocaust. I like hip hop and discussing it with other hip hop fans is a part of the culture..I can't be wasting time with some dude with fruity loops that will make 1 album then get a job middle managing a Home Depot and vanish. Even Holocaust was a waste of time cause turns out he was psychotic.

A lot of the time their beats are just weak impersonations of what they think a wutang beat is supposed to sound like. 3 layers, a faggy sample and the same drum pattern as everyone else. Then uninteresting lyrics with great diction. I like people who are willing to push the envelop and compete with the mainstream because they'll push the whole of hip hop into a better direction. So I appreciate Kendrick for that reason. There's underground dudes that can out rap him but him doing it on the a public level makes the rest of hip hop step it's game up and try to compete with him.

Fair enough. I like music that I enjoy listening to. I also appreciate creativity more than anything else, when it leads to something interesting and enjoyable to listen to. I haven't had the slightest bit of interest in anybody remotely 'commercial' since pac and big. And that's not cos I have a prejudice against them. It's simply that none of them have been remotely interesting or appealing to me.

It seems to me it's almost a rule that the more popular and successful someone is, the more bland and forgettable their music tends to be. I don't know. Music is my life. Playing it. Making my own. Listening to it. I've never had any desire to make money from it or get my name out there. I make and play it for myself. We're from 2 completely different worlds as far as what music means to us.
