When the original Mega Man was released in December 1987, it was due to be shipped out the next day, but they still did not have any cover artwork for it, so one of the people working on the game commissioned an artist friend of his to draw something. So he described the game to him as best he could and his friend drew the game box artwork off of that. He drew it in six hours because the game had to ship out the next day, but still had no art. So that is basically why the Mega Man art is so bad and was believed to be why the first Mega Man game sold so poorly.
