Thread: Albums you bought purely on the strength of the cover art

Default Albums you bought purely on the strength of the cover art

I used to do this with mixed results lol.

we didn't get to hear any hiphop on the radio here so it was either you knew the group name from god knows where if they weren't big, or you recognized some of the features. like I used to buy a lot of albums on the strength of Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg features, including a shit load of extremely bad soundtracks featuring the D O double G (it was the nineties, what do you want me to say lol) or ... you just picked one based on the cover art

honestly I can still remember a lot of 90s album covers from constantly browsing the store (mostly with no money in hand) without ever hearing the actual music

any album covers that stick out for you, helping you land a purchase?

I have never purchased an album off of cover art, but a few days ago I listened to Big Bear's album Doin Thanks due to its notorious cover art and was pleasantly surprised that the album is actually pretty damn good. I purchased a couple of Nintendo Entertainment System games off of the cover art, Jackal and Power Blade and they are some of my favorites now. I had never heard of Tech N9ne prior to Anghellic, except for his guest appearance on Sole's album Skin Deep on the song Ain't Nobody Fucking With It. XXL reviewed it and gave it an L rating. The reviewer made it sound really good so I copped it and became a permanent fan and have purchased his entire catalogue to date, up to Planet, which was released yesterday..

I think I had done that for some No Limit albums such as Soulja Slim's first album and Skull Duggery's second. I don't think I had heard much from them before that. Both turned out to be good albums.

    nice picks

I'll always remember Ice-T's power cover art. I never heard the album but that image is just so simple and powerful

Without having listened to any of the songs before, the Seventh Deadly Sin became one of my favourites. It's just a vicious Westcoast-Eastcoast mash up. I know some people think of Ice-T as a corny type of guy but, man, this dude is the real deal imo.

Temple of Boom's artwork is fucking classic, too. So many nice covers in the golden era.
