Wu-Tang Clan Sued for Copyright Infringement: Report
A ’60s soul group, the Diplomats, claim Wu-Tang’s “People Say” infringes on their 1969 track

Wu-Tang Clan has been sued for copyright infringement, TMZ reports. A ’60s soul group called the Diplomats claim that Wu-Tang’s 2017 single “People Say” infringes on their 1969 track “I’ve Got the Kind of Love.” According to TMZ, the Diplomats note similarities between “the melody, lyrics, and rhythm” in the two songs. The group is seeing damages and wants Wu-Tang to halt sales and further performances of the song. Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for Wu-Tang Clan for further comment. “People Say” was produced by Mathematics, executive produced by RZA, and features Redman. It appears on Wu-Tang’s latest album, The Saga Continues.

lol @ not clearing the sample. I wasn't familiar with the Diplomats song but when you hear both songs the similarities are glaringly obvious

So would RZA have to pay for this since he "is" Wu-Tang?

Mathematics repeatedly stated during press interviews that there were no samples on the album.

The music video should go down soon.
But he could say he didn't sample directly from that song but a rearrangement, Interpolation or he brought a live band to play it.

If you keep digging there's probably more samples. WOW

Someone should have warned them about ppl who make it a habit to look for samples from producers that say its all "original"

BTW its a good song too.

Sounds like it was misreported. Still its stupid to not sort this shit out before releasing an album, especially given all the shit RZAs been talking about sampling.

Wu is a big name and they had this as their lead single for the compilation, with a music video to boot. Someone was going to catch it. Mathematics claiming he didn't sample is stupid, almost every track on there had samples even if it was just dubbed Kung Fu flicks.

You'd think after 25 years of doing this, they'd know enough to clear shit and not try to slip it through like nobody will notice. This is just blatant.

But clearing samples cost a lot! and I mean A LOT! Depending on the artist you sample of course but nevertheless I bet they didn't think the album would achieved the success it achieved (taking into consideration Wu last shit, the album was a really hit) and now they have problems.

No wonder why sampling is dying. So many dope beats would've been created if it wasn't for sample clearance. On the other hand, I'm not surprised that the artists whose songs are constantly sampled want to the get their piece of the pie

"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth" (Rev. 3:15-16)
