didn't feel it on first listen but i'll give it another spin. Every track on Daytona at least has a verse that keeps me coming back. It sounds like the most composed and focused effort of all the releases.
Kids See Ghosts and Daytona are dope. Absolutely the best 2 rap albums I've heard in a few years. Ye is scattered but enjoyable. The Teyana Taylor record is fantastic but isn't finished so I'm going to delete it and wait for the final edition.
Nasir has a couple of great songs and fire production but Nas legitimately could have used some of Kanyes ghostwriters on a few songs. Maybe as I got older my tolerance for pro black history revision and pseudo science has been worn down. Besides that theres a lot of uncomfortable moments on the rap side. I should have known not to get my hopes up for a Nas album. When has he not been disappointing, half good half shit and frustrating as fuck? The one time in the last 20 years he gets a set of good beats he screws up. I think back in the day Steve Stoute and Poke & Tone made him rewrite 'If I Ruled The World' several times...
Overall Kanye gave us some dope records in an innovative way, but the execution was far from perfect. I appreciate the effort though. And at least 2 releases are totally awesome to me.
I feel like that matters less than the fact that none of those writers would do anything like this by themselves. All the music has an undeniably Kanye feel except for KSG, which feels like a real hybrid of Kanye and Cudis styles. 'Ghost' is misleading anyway, you can check the credits and see who produced what, its not hidden.
I posted months ago that the biggest risk Nas can run is trying to sound informed, in this era, on his 'next album' which is this one. He's a middle school drop out in the end of the day. He's not going to be able to produce, academically, anything that surpasses the average 17 year olds twitter timeline. Or he'll just say - like this album points out - shit that literally isn't true. Songs like 'I know I can' are cool for kids, but Nas has to just rap about what he knows not what he thinks society expects him to know. Even his encounters with women on the album borderline retarded to my 30-year-old ears. He's too old and underexposed for 2018 hotempry. Even Rza now sounds like a complete fucking idiot.
I think Black Thought is the only rapper that I trust intellectually to deliver something that isn't cringy when he's trying to 'sound smart'. Everyone else, especially Nas, has to just stick to what they know even if it's growing up as a kid in fucking Queensbridge (which subject-wise, is the source of his best material).
I think Kanye's production overall lacks replay value. He's good at making things that are great momentarily for some reason. I don't get it. I don't know too many Kanye fans that even listen to his old music, though they rate it highly. Some of his roc-a-fella days production has a lot of replay value but from his debut on, if I ever like a song produced by him it's only for a few months.
