Mainstream rap is just something different. The sounds that appeal to the younger crowd are the trap, drill, and auto tune mumble rap. It’s a different genre.
The mistake the east coast I made I believe was that they tried to jump on that band wagon instead of staying true to their roots. They also stopped supporting the younger talents, instead trying to remain relevant by hopping on the trends of the south. No good.
I’m glad east coast hip hop went back underground because of that.

@Noel on white rappers. all white rappers are industry plants. Studios create them the way they're creating the rappers with colored hair and tattoos. I think it's a cultural thing. I grew up with white people and never saw 1 white person handing out mixtapes or going from battle to battle or inviting you to fuck with his music myspace. I can't name a white rapper that isn't a corporate decision to concoct something that 'will sell' based off various gimmicks. MArkey Mark, Vanilla Ice, Eminem, MAchine Gun Kelly, etc, you'll have a hard time finding their actual story or 'rise'. Eminem has that fake shit about his mom thinking he was diseased and doing pill but it's pretty obvious the exaggerated that and lied a lot. He at least has battling to his credit but was an entirely different person then. Interscope picked him up, and based on gallup polls made him dye his hair, insult pop stars and wear a white t shirt and jeans.
There are black industry plants too, and all of the 'mumble rappers' fit in that category as well as feggs like Chance the Rapper, Cash Money etc, but I think concoting posers is the normal mode of operation in white culture as far as creating stars or distributing music.
