Also I don't give flying fuck about rza sounding like his old self. Of course he never will, and it probably wouldn't work in a modern day context if he did. All music evolves. Not just hip hop. I mean when did Paul McCartney ever make a solo album that sounded like the Beatles?

I just want the cunt to make good beats.

The Tanasia beat actually sounds like a Cilvaringz beat.. I think I hear the same sample in Cilva's "The Headless Horseman" track from Mental Chambers.

was classic rza, id say these two beats prolly come the closest to the classic sound versus most since (sans a few beats here and there)

rza made some odd choices on that album but the talent was still there. the dexter wiggles, that chinese poem, 8 hooks on life changes when the verses follow each other perfectly in twos, electrid guitar on unpredictable, mixing changes from mixtape for the worse, rae and ghost slander (8d > bdr)and some lackluster performances from some of members... hurt that album but inthink the beats are def the highlight of it overall... grimey wu in 2007... a better tomorrow in 2014 is waaaay too bright peoduction wise.

^yeah ABT I totally get the hate. It was def a flop. I don't think it's bad, but it's not good either. Not as a wu album anyway. 8D was dope tho.

Don't get me wrong, I like 8D too. But for me the Tanasia beat sounds pre 8D. Just my opinion, but the drums sound dirtier and the simplicity of the grimy drums and the sped-up sample is more akin to classic Rza aesthetic, than the last two Wu albums. I was in no way saying that the beats are weak on 8D, quite the contrary. It's just that Rza from 8D onwards has a tendency to over-produce - Campfire and Unpredictable are a case in point. If anything, it was the performance of the emcees that were more of a let down on 8D. Notably Gza on Starter and Rae on the tracks he was on; Deck too with the Tupperware ref.
I definitely enjoyed the beats more than the lyrics on 8D.
Just to reiterate, I am not dissing Rza's work on 8D. The Tanasia beat has that bare bones aesthetic that is more redolent to me of the old Rza sound more so than his work on 8D.

I want to say 'always' albeit without the amazing quality standards.

To my ears the 'Tanasia' beat sounds like an Afro Samurai era beat (2 underrated albums) while 'Highly Favored' sounds like early 2000s when RZA did a bunch of bare bones beats like that.

Shit, I haven't heard a McCartney album for years, apart from that good wings one, but from my memory his solo albums didn't sound Beatles at all. Been a long thyme tho.

I need to listen to these nas songs properly now that I've gotten involved in this discussion, lolz. But one of my first thoughts was afro samurai style too. But that might just b cos those n the clan albums r the only rza shit I've heard in the last 15 years or whatever, lol. And digi snacks.

And mythrandir, I get what u're saying, bro. It's funny, I actually play several instruments, but I don't really pick up on the intricacies and specifics of beats like cunts on here do. Like I couldn't get into descriptive discussions on beats like u cunts do. Maybe it's even because I'm more traditional instrument minded? I do listen to what's happening in beats with interest tho. I find good hip hop beats more interesting musically than I do a lot of rock n shit, n certainly more interesting than metal or punk or any of that shit.

"Tanasia" is definitely a sample we've heard from some Killa Bee or General.. 9th and TMF i hear... Regardless.. the "way " Rza flips it, makes it one of the best Wu-sounding beats he's done in a while...imo
I had that joint on repeat all day, honestly, and Nas killed it!!

I wouldn't be surprised if Tanasia is an early to mid 2000 RZA beat.

Yeah he did circa 2010/11. Rza mentioned in an interview back then, that Nas and Busta went through some of Rza's vault and take whatever select cuts they wanted.
But there is no telling when the actual Tanasia beat was made. If definately sounds much older than 2010. I would say it sounds like it was produced around the same time as The Turn; Run; Brutality... so I would say 2001-04 era. It certainly pre-dates 8D Rza production.

To me it sounds like it would fit on Afro Samurai (2007-2009) because he had a lot of beats with a similar eastern vibe.

Tanasia doesn't sound similar to the beats you mention.
