God damn this looks good. Even old ass actors and de-aging effects can't fuck this up.
Are they going to start using holograms of dead actors in movies more often? Robert deniro may have alzheimers? All he does nowadays is ramble on and on about wanting to injure the president. He's whacked in the head.
Can't wait, the early reviews for this are excellent.
apparently mickey rourke is throwing a fit over not being in this movie, claiming he was 'asked' for casting by the crew but then was vetoed by DeNiro (not allowed to go in for a shot at casting after all) since they have some beef that goes way back
this is on my to watch list
People from the Irishman camp said Rourke was bs’ing. He was never considered for the movie they claim. He looks terrible now a days. Not enough of CGI to fix him. Praying daily that this comes to my theaters. Peace
Saw it last Friday. It’s obviously good. But not at Goodfellas or Casino level. Anyone else? Peace
Terrific film.
Its not as similar to Casino or Goodfellas as some might expect, because the pace is obviously much slower and The Irishman's subject matter is relatively less glamorous, but in some ways it feels like a deeper movie. Its much more grim and depressing with its focus on aging, death, a wasted life. Even though Scorsese has made gangster movies before, he isn't repeating himself here.
The digital effects work well, I kind of wish they didn't use it as a talking point/publicity for the film because as many have said you get used to it early on in the film.
Its dope watching the masters at work here. De Niro is magnetic, Pesci is subtle, Pacino gives one of his animated, maniacal performances that's super entertaining. Its a fascinating piece of American history and probably the last real epic gangster movie from artists of this caliber.
A brilliant film from a brilliant director. From beginning to end, this film captured my full attention. The runtime is over three hours but it'll seem last than that because the actor's performances, the music, and the pace of the film will pull you in.
The film was released last Wednesday and I've already watched it twice. Al Pacino (Jimmy Hoffa), Robert DeNiro (Frank S.), and Joe Pesci (Russell) are just absolutely brilliant in this film. Genius level performances by the legends and I'm blown away from the other actors and actresses, too.
It would've be grand to have seen The Irishman on the big screen. For a Netflix film (I'm not a fan of Netflix films nor is anyone), The Irishman is one of the years best films. This is a must see!
Rating: 5/5
Loyalty is Royalty. Strength and Loyalty
i've been going around yelling SOLIDARITY everywhere. Phenomenal movie. Completely didn't except the pacing, tone, and style at all but it really feels like Socrceses actually improved on his already master level craft. This is his best directed, most deliberate movie. Joe Pesci surprised me with how good he was in particular. He was subtle like Sha said, but still menacing - though in a different way. De Niro, of course, killed his role too. Pacino made the movie for me. He was so off beat with the rest of the character's temperament that it ended up being funny in a good way. He was incredible.
Someone broke the movie's style down for me and that made it a masterpiece to me once I got it. This movie is really an atonement. They took all the added flare and glamour out of the mafia/thug life and left you with 100% reality. This is actually what it looks like. No witty lines, no charisma, no rush, boring dressing, shitty conversations, and no real 'grand plan'. Just thin skinned criminals following orders. Their family members were completely weirded out by them as would be the normal reaction, and none of them had any ambitions other than staying alive and following orders. De Niro's character turned 'good character development' completely on it's head. He has an exceptionally good character with no wants. No reliability, no 'personality', nothing and that made him realer. I feel like he made it this real to atone for glorifying it in the past and making it something it wasn't.
I think the point was emphasized with how Hoffa's 'charismatic' speech was so fucking wack LOL. It was like a mafia king of the hill. Then watching them age was what put the movie over the top for me. My MS movie rankings are now
1. Casino
2. Goodfellas
3. Gangs of New York
4. The Irishman
5. Taxi Driver
GREAT movie.
some stray observations :
*robbie robertson (formerly of The Band) pulled off one helluva score : one part melancholy, one part youthful innocence, one part remorse
*ray romano looks like a bloated jeff goldblum
*pacino & deniro look like bloated versions of pacino & deniro, respectively
*skampoe is selling caskets these days
How many Tony's do YOU know?
Great movie I’ve seen it 5 times now.
First time I saw it I really liked it but I needed to see if it was rewatchable after a few days.
The first watch I was alittle focused on the de aging thing. But since then I don’t even recognize it.
It’s the most fluid 3.5 hour movie I’ve seen. It never drags for me.
Editing was great, and I loved the score and the soundtrack choices. Nobody is better at that than Scorsese.
The way he times out a scene to an actual song no a score.
The scene where he describes what Russ does up until they whack Anastasia in hotel barber shop was Scorsese at his best in my opinion.
I though De Niro did a great job with Frank.
I’d put this above gangs of New York probably too 5 up there with Mean streets, the Departed goodfellas, raging bull and taxi driver.
I liked his movie Silence, but the Irishman succeeds where Silence was slowed down because of length.

I watched JFK a few days after I watched this for the second time because parts of the film connect. The weird eyebrow guy with the cubans who Frank delivers the arms to is David Ferrie, implicated in the assassination of JFK, and played by Joe Pesci in that film.
