Thread: What are the greatest live albums ever?

  1. #1

Question What are the greatest live albums ever?

recently The Who's "Live At Leeds" was brought to my attention (I might buy it) and that sparked the idea for this thread

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmfQ...x2mIzhrnPtbMp0

^^ song by song vids of the full concert

    ^^ full album

^^ deluxe includes 'Tommy' (not everyone seems to like the remastering on this one)

so, what live releases do you think everyone should own?

Black Sabbath's The End was great, it's just a shame they didn't let Bill Ward on the tour and when they do the band introductions halfway through the cd the crowd gives no fucks to the drummer and Ozzy says they're not going to continue unless they applaud more lol

If you watch the performance for Paranoid you'll see Geezer with a kickass Aston Villa guitar

never was a big fan of live albums.

but one for me really stands out and its mostly because, their regular albums were ight, but there were always songs that stood out so much more, that it kind of hurt the album as a whole imo, plus it being pop punk the album was already short as shit. so this live tape is actually a pretty great collection of all good songs with no filler.

Been meaning to get to this thread...

As a guitarist I fuckin' love good live albums. The best guitarists truly shine(d) on stage more than anywhere else. I'll list some of my faves here, my very favourites in CAPITALS.

Rory Gallagher - irish tour '74
ALBERT KING & STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - IN SESSION
    joe bonamassa - beacon theatre
R.l. burnside - burnside on burnside
ROY BUCHANAN - LIVE STOCK and LIVE IN 1971
    Cream - royal albert hall
DAVID GILMOUR - LIVE IN GDANSK and LIVE AT POMPEII
    ERIC CLAPTON - MTV UNPLUGGED
Jimi Hendrix - all of them. He has a lot of good live shit.
    Led zeppelin - celebration day
Neil young - again, all his live shit
Pink floyd - is there anybody out there?
    GARY CLARK JR. - LIVE
    john mayer trio - try
    Oasis - familiar to millions
R.E.M. - LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA and Live

I'm sure I'm forgetting some shit. I prefer live DVDs and used to collect them. Still have a decent few.

    thank you everyone

@Hound I realize now it's not UFO, I read your post too quickly. I'm listening to the vids you posted right now. Good stuff!

On the subject of UFO, "Strangers in the night" is good. My buddy bought the 8 disc box set reissue last year and gave me the original album. Some overdubs on that one.

    Also good :

Thin Lizzy - Live and dangerous (a lot of overdubs)

Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East (so many overdubs that fans call it 'Unleashed in the studio' lol, but sounds great) - supposedly the remaster that came out a few years ago sounds even better

Aerosmith - Live Bootleg. It's an official double album release (to counter the tsunami of bootlegs) with songs performed in the seventies. No overdubs at all and no polishing up of the sound. Aerosmith sound pretty raw. The sound is a bit thin in the beginning of the recording but gets better after the first song.

Genesis - The way we walk, the shorts. This is a good one for people who like Genesis but hate the poppy singles from the eighties and early nineties and stopped buying albums. It's these same songs that are on here lol (sorry hahaha) but live they somehow sound much better, I guess through sheer enthusiasm on the band and the crowd's part. (The companion album 'The longs' is good but there are much better live albums that showcase their longer songs. Also, the old long prog songs from the seventies are mixed into a 20 minute medley that is solid but not spectacular.) I have always preferred these live versions too the singles and put together on a live disc tgey somehow make sense.
