Default Really dope: Rick Rubin interviews RZA (2025 new just dropped) rza goes in on all things

rza goes in on lyrics, production techniques, etc

says he was jealous of killah priest being deemed best in 96 by all wu. So rzas 96-97 run is based on keeping up with priest.

Default RZA Interview - Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin

Probably the best and most insightful RZA interview ever. Audio only but worth it

Goes on to talk about how he got $5mil to do a Bobby Digital album which was unheard of for hip hop, why he did it (basically half the clan ruined the RAGE tour, they thought doing the tour was selling out and wanted to do their own individual thing).
Within that deal, RZA spent millions to buy his 'RZA' name back
Talks about Cilva and the OUATIS album, saying he probably put too much trust in Cilva, the student challenged the master, and was doing things that were not 'pure.' Basically what most of WuCorp said from the jump about the album.

Tons of minor details he's never shared anywhere else though

I'm not all the way through but he said Wu is doing something special for 2025 and based on what he described I wouldnt doubt that it's a new album, somewhere after the hour 30 mark

he mentioned they are all back in a creative and mutual respectful space similar to recording 36 chambers.

Also, RZA is just a damn genius. Describing his other 5 year plan to make all the members millionaires again with the documentary, show, tour, etc.

Thank You to Killah Priest for inspiring The Pick, The Sickle And The Shovel era Rza.. That was Rzarector firing on all cylinders. I just have to come to terms with that being the best Rza we can get unless perhaps The Cure drops one day if the planets align

I wonder if that is why he had no production on Heavy Mental? Probably did not want fuel Killah Priest's fire and give him more ammunition, ha ha.

For real, Frukwan and Too Poetic stepped their bars up crazy strong to match Rza also.. Wu Elements brought their audio heat.
This album is something that I hope someday gets recognized outside of hard core Wu Tang nerds.. Best lyrical album of 1997

2nd Gravediggaz album is as good as Forever. Most of the details in the description of this interview RZA already shared in his bullshit book The Tao of Wu, except throwing Cilvaringz under the bus. I'll listen to this eventually but that book turned me off of the RZA. Everything is always everyone else's fault and they're ungrateful or too slow to understand how his own mistakes are actually for everyone but always makes him come out best.

The Killah Priest thing makes sense. He was also imitating Shabazz the Disciple (Killah's partner) when he would do the gruff rapping. Priest was always the best and most original with the esoteric bars. I can't buy RZA's new New Age persona. He's not nearly as educated on religion and the occult as he pretends. The 1 thing he's an expert on is the 120 lessons.

Your timeline is off. Priest was back in forth doing this album and the last shall be first. It was until after View from Masada they started going at it. Sunz of Man kicked him off Saviorz Day.

Only a few years ago Hip Hop purists may have felt superior listening to hard core while their less enlightened companions snacked on commercial rap. As Shaolin research began to point out the overwhelming benefits of raw production, true hip hop enthusiasts started turning back to traditional styles. Wu-Tang in particular, has been shown to myriad beneficial effects, from warding off ignorance and poverty to reducing the risk of incarceration and death.

It's nowhere near forever. You're clearly a RZA hater lol
i mean im pretty sure it started in late 98 at the latest (and maybe even 97) and only became public after. Priest went from the only killer bee featured on wu solos/big projects and features multi times (2x on odb, 2x diggaz 1, 1xdiggaz 2, 2x gza, america) to just being on gzas album 99, not on the swarm (which dropped the same DAY as sunz of man and they were on it as well as ghost dog, other wu albums.)

RZA wasnt doing business with him well before views. And also remember he removed his verse from HM. Idk for same reason but that was ibv before even heavy mental. There was 100% was a brewing business issue in 98/99 before those 2 albums even came out.

zero wu production on views which was recorded in 99 after HM being purely wu project. True and 4th were wu tang productions so then not being on his album meant the RZA didnt ok it. Also thevtalk of priest being out of sunz of man was way before saviors day… sunz isnt on views or any other actual wu member either. Att noone spoke about it yet but wu fans already could tell something was there.

Tho priest started beefing with rza publicly after views in 2000 but this is all from prior issues building.

i mean i knew priest left sunz of man years before saviors day came out so it def wasnt that late. Thats why he formed the maccabeez and 4 horsemen in 99/2000. Maccabeez was his new sunz.

    Forensikz, you made great points.

Other guy, how am I a RZA hater if I said another album with RZA is equal to Forever? Dumb. He might rap more on the 2nd Gravediggaz album than he does on Forever.

I find it funny that RZA now decides to call some of the stuff Cilva did whatever he calls it, yet throughout this whole saga pretended it was genius, even his idea and stood by it. Now that it’s getting attention and could be released, and he’s the one keeping it from being properly released, he starts to point the finger. Yeah RZA can go back to shaolin with that bullshit.
