I mean I always loved and respected RZA, but he is saying some straight up nonsense at times. Like Jet said, RZA spitting knowledge was decades ago. Like he forgot he is Bobby Digital and made “Drink, Smoke and F#ck”. And I’m biased towards Wu and no way GZA is better than Nas. Especially since Nas has had a late resurgence and GZA been asleep for over a decade. Peace

Bobby Digital is an alter ego.

True, but to this day, we still don’t have a single proper RZA album. Yet we have exactly four Bobby Digital albums and 1 EP.

Bobby Digital is RZA’s lazy alter ego — it’s convenient for him because he doesn’t have to drop wisdom. But honestly, that’s pretty disappointing for the fans, in my opinion.

^100 percent. And he/Wu hasn’t been the same since the Bobby D stuff. Granted I like a good chunk of the material but nobody ever wanted more than 2 albums of that. Shame we never got a 93-97 RZA style album. Peace

Especially a 1997 Rza solo album. That would have been insane..

Exactly. While it is an alter ego, it is also lazy cop out. Next to that, after 25 years of albums in solely from said alter ego, it is not a lot of alter ego and more maybe who he is. At this point it is more honest to say the The RZA is the alter ego.

And now with him doing the rounds, he is cherrypicking verses from 25 years ago as if he always spits that level consistently. Nah bro. You can't be Tarantino, always referring to Pulp Fiction & Reservoir Dogs. While in the 2000's you have released nothing but straight to video Steven Seagall movies because you liked doing that.

Another thing I noticed while listening, is that he makes Wu-Tang essential. The influence is undeniable. But saying Wu is essential to the development of Jay-Z is a bit much. Especially since he was out there doing his thing. RZA did get checked though when he claimed Dirty had the first comedy hiphop album, and they pointed out that Biz Markie was there before him. Who was a huge influence on Dirty. That said, it is Drink Champs and people are under influence.

If we actually had a The Cure, or solo The RZA album, he could be forgiven. But he bailed on that idea.

A 97-99 RZA album would have been insane though.

Even though he was modeling more off of Nas who was running with Esco post Cuban Linx guest spot than Wu themselves, Jay is still rhyming like the Fu Shnickens without OB4CL. Without Supreme Clientele, Kanye and Just Blaze aren't digging for sample heavy beats which lead to The Blueprint. Jay when running Def Jam specifically heard the producers Ghost was working with while making Big Doe Rehab and grabbed them up for his comeback on American Gangster.

Without Wu, Jay's career is incredibly different.

    Fair enough.

And I can totally agree on your last point. Because I wanted to stress that, it is not absolute, but it would be different. Who's to say that somehow somebody else would not have gone digging for sample heavy beats. Sometimes people are discovering things at the same time. Hip hop being a technology driven music, I can see someon else discovering or going a certain way.

Btw, did not know all those producers were picked up for American Gangster.

    Agreed.

I would add Griselda as well. Their best songs have RZA style all over them. They have given props to the Wu though, as well as Kanye. Wu should have gotten Kanye to produce the entire 8 Diagrams.

Jay would never admit it and strangely we have never had Jay/Wu collabs (aside from obscure remixes). Not even a Heaven remix.

Heaven is more Wu sounding than your average Wu song. Peace

I’m confused??? Rza - Birth Of A Prince?

That was Rza album as much as you don’t wanna believe it, I actually really liked it also and IMO is Rza’s best album

Yeah In Stereo has better Wu bangers but as an album BOAP flows much better IMO

See the joy verse he’s been trying to release since his prince rakeem days!

Digital Bullet is my favorite Bobby D album. BOAP was supposed to be him leaving behind Digital and transitioning back to RZA. As u get the RZA type tracks towards end. However, still had trash like “We Pop”, “The Drop Off” and “Drink, Smoke and F#ck”. Which are far from RZA tracks. I know Free Murder was a blood relative but Wu has too much talent in camp for this guy to be on multiple tracks. Peace

Possibly, but in this instance, Kanye & Just both specifically cited Supreme Clientele specifically as the reason they started producing that way at that time and because they were in house, Jay had access to all those beats. And then The Blueprint catapulted Jay, Just and Kanye's careers and set a production tone for the next half decade. All directly inspired by Supreme Clientele.
