Japan has a great movie database to be proud of. In my opinion better then Hollywood movies. In fact...whole Asia has the greatest movies in my opinion.

So what are your favorite Japanese movies? we already have a Kung-Fu Flicks in the Box Office Hideout so, don't come with Kung-Fu movies....1 st of all, they're not Japanese and second...there's allready a thread LOL.
Samuraï movies,yakuza,gore,cult,drama,thriller,you name it...just discuss.

To start of I would like to begin with some of my favorite movies.

Akira Kurosaw is my most favorite Japanese director ofcourse, next is Miike Takashi.

If you haven't seen "Miike's "Dead Or Alive" yet, then you should cop that stuff, brilliant movie, very shockin' and has a BRILLIANT film twist wich you will never expect to happen. It's a gangster,drama,shock movie realy....Never mind "Dead Or Alive II" and part III, I mean...they're 'pretty' allright, but nuthin' compared with the original. because of those other two it became more of a hype...too bad.....

And ofcourse I'm gonna bring this up.....

Toshiya Fujita's "Lady Snowblood" wich stars my idol actress Meiko Kaji, the queen of Asian exploitation movies.



"Lady Snowblood" is bloody revenge movie wich influenced Quentin Tarantino to create his own blade swinging modern Samuraï movie "Kill Bill". See the resemblance with Lucy Liu's character "Oren Ici-I" ??

The story is like this:

In the 3rd year of Meiji Japan, a family is attacked by bandits. The father and child are killed, the mother Sayo taken by one of the evil-doers as a slave. When Sayo is imprisoned and unable to exact her vengeance, she bears another child, Yuki (Meiko Kaji), to carry on where Sayo. Yuki is born for vengeance, and that may be all she ever knows.

It's definitelly a must-see movie.


Probable the most disgusting Japanese movie I saw and own is "Guts Of A Virgin" , yeah I own it, cause I collect the extremely weird,bloody and gory japanese movies aswel.

"Guts Of A Virgin" brings the story of a crew nude models and there photographers on the way to a photoshoot. The stay in this house next to some woods and get drunk and play some sexual games in that house while all of the sudden a weird creature with a "Monster Dick" starts killing all of them.

Realy, I saw this movie with my father and stepmother the first time and they were like "What...the....fuck.....? " But they saw the whole movie (my father probable because of the superfluous amount of sex).
I wasn't realy sure what I watched after the movie was finished, I was paralised cause....it was the weirdest movie I ever saw. I'm DYING to tell how the movie ends but that wouldn't be right, but the end is just great...well, funny...or....just awefull?? I don't realy know.....

the last samurai...if u call that a jap movie.....thats all i own..ima start getting some tho...like the set of lonly wolf and cub dvds...witch is shogun assasian pluse the rest of the films...most peeps didnt know that....

Yeah I git the original Shogun Assassin on DVD, great movie ofcourse, another must have, espescially for Wu-tang fans.

It got banned for some years.

Battle Royal is a classic, at first when I saw it in the DVD store i was like "This looks like shit" But after some reviews I finally copped it,watched it and damn,one of the greatest movies ever.

I just got myself another Jurosawa one "Kagemusha" can't wait to watch it, looks to me like it's another Samuraï epos.

All Kitano's movies are classics for me.
I think Hana-bi is the greatest 90's movie with fight club and pulp fiction.
This man is a genius. As director and as actor.

My favourite Japanese diretor is Takeshi Kitano,too. I also think all of his movies are great. they are always unique. Plus he acts great . A very charismatic cat.

Have you seen "a scene at the sea"? it ´s a totally non-violent movie by Kitano. it´s about a mute guy who learns how to surf - a pretty simple plot but i felt the movie from the first second. it´s one of his earlier films, and the first one i saw in which he didn´t act. but still masterpiece. a must see.

Never heard of that one, looks like a very weird movie well for Japanese cinema, it's something totally different.

Yeah that´s right it´s diffrent. but like i said the movie is without viollence. no blood and stuff, no yakuzas. it´s not that much typical japanese it´s typical Takeshi Kitano....
Anyway, what u think about ichi the killer? i mean it´s not bad, but not the best miike film. i like city of lost souls f.e. much better. if you wanna see some real brutal shit, watch "pornostar"( no it´s not porn at all...) reeeal sick, man.

Yep crazy movie. The first kitano/Hisaishi collabo. Very nice movie. Amazing OST.
