this really is the worst season for road cycling in years

today in the Tour of Belgium two of the motorcyclists that accompanied the peloton were trying to get ahead of the peloton in a descent where cyclists were approaching speeds of 50 mph. the motor cyclists used a small path next to the road that suddenly ended at some kind of small gate. both motorcyclists were catapulted into the rushing peloton

19 cyclists were hit, about 8 of them were flown to a hospital. one of them was reanimated on the scene. he's the same cyclist who got run over by a motorcycle in a race three months a go. latest news is that he is touch and go

the peloton refused to continue racing afterwards. everybody is still very emotional over the cyclists that died about 3 months ago

there is no video footage of the crash

there has been an ongoing debate about decreasing the number of motorcyclists in races this year. there is also talk of making the teams of riders themselves smaller so as to make the peloton smaller

big races have motorcyclists that carry tv crew people (mostly 3 motorcycles for this), newspaper photographers, signalers (they signal hazardous road marks ahead to the peloton), extra wheels for riders etc

btw yesterday in the Giro d'Italia then GC leader Steven Kruijswijk crashed into an iced slope while descending a mountain slope, fracturing one of his ribs and losing the lead. the 5th in GC drove off the road and broke his left shoulder blad and his clavicle

    competitive cycling is dangerous business

^^the newspapers ran the number of motorcyclists involved in this race : 48 (!!!)

that means that there's roughly a 1:3 motorcyclist - cyclist ratio

    no wonder accidents happen

we are slowly but surely moving to closed circuit races (like in F1 & motorcycle racing) where they can do away with most of the motorcyclists.

out of those 48 no less than 15 were meant to block parts of crossroads during the race. you could get rid of those already on a closed circuit

also don't forget about the team cars driving behind the various groups of cyclists (lead, peloton, 'bus / grupetto')

the Tour de France & Tour of Austria always happen around the same time

this pic of the winner of yesterday's stage of the Tour of Austria shows you exactly why riders prefer the Tour de France

Nearly a century ago, Robert Marchand was told by a coach that he should give up cycling because he would never achieve anything on a bike.

Tour of Turkey. Gruesome. IDK what this fool was trying to achieve. "Ooh I'll just go and cheer them on RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACK". French sprinter Bouhanni is in the hospital

this is turning out to be one of the more entertaining Tours de France of recent years. I respect Bradley Wiggins / Chris Froome / Geraint Thomas but they and their (erstwhile) team kind of killed the Tour with their method of climbing each mountain in group as fast as possible, the way Lance Armstrong and his team did earlier on too. it's an effective method but frankly it's a boring watch

this year we get a nice duel between the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (two time TdF winner) and Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard, last year's runner up

overall the last few Tours have been entertaining. I kind of gave up on TdF for a few years and missed one of Chris Froome's wins and Geraint Thomas' single win, due to the strategy I described above

in general the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana are slightly more entertaining to watch as they are less controlled but on the downside they are not organized in the holiday season so a lot of people only get to see the short stage summaries in the evening news

it was a good decision to bring back teams from 9 members to only 8, it helps downsize 'control' in the big tours, also it allows for more teams to enter the competition
