Looking at it again, you're right BUT why wouldn't they be able to do it if God was there with them? Usually in the Bible you win when God is with you and lose if you angered Him.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was the same reason why Noah's son wouldn't board the Ark with him, it just had to happen the way it happened. I wasn't there and I know very little about it.

He did win though. Maybe not in the complete destruction of the other party kind of way, but he did.
