I only picked this up last week and i love it! Finesse is fuckin ill on the mic he rips every track up, and although its mostly braggagido, and battle raps, he manges to stay and sound fresh in each track. That could also be considered the only problem, however he does changer subject matter on "Lessson to be Thought", and "Striclty for the ladies". Production is fire all the way through, a lot of funk james brown samples used, hence the title.

Favourite track - "Girl You Nasty (New Version)". Fuckin love this track, a dope beat from DJ Premier, with Finesse rippin it up.

Def get Showbiz & AG - "Runaway Slave", & "Goodfellas". Their pricey, but worth it. This was my first taste of Lord Finessse, but im gonna cop "The Awakening", and "Return of the Funky Man" if i get a chance

fucking brilliant album in my opinion, golden age classic although it's majorly slept on.. Lord Finesse got such a smooth flow and his delivery is totally off the wall, combined with some of the illest one-liners you'll ever hear he is up there with the best like Kool G Rap and Grand Puba.

production wise half of it is done by a young DJ Premier (who supplies much better beats than most found on "No More Mr. Nice Guy" imo) and the other half by Diamond D/Showbiz. heavy samples from James Brown and old jazz-records throughout, this shit is really kicking - PICK IT UP!!

    9/10

"Bad Mutha" is one of my favorites of the album, but this disc doesn't have any bad songs..

i like it too..im just saying the the beat has been used to much since . i agree top to bottom one of the greatest.

now the follow up record would be an intresting "Return Of The Funky Man" is a more debatable record .

yeah, agreed... "Return of the Funky Man" is a real dope album too imo, just not as tight as this one. "The Awakening" is his 2nd best LP.
