Default Why is Columbus Day still celebrated in the US?

I know this topic might have been brought up in the past.. but why is Columbus respected in the US at all? He was never even in the US at all to start.

"See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.
He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse."

Fuck Christophor Columbus! He force the indian race into slavery, took their resources, women, and damn near destroyed the race of indians. Everybody think America is this great country, but they don't know the history of how America became the "great" nation.

I thought everyone did know that but just pretend they don't.

Truthfully I didn't know it was "celebrated" or was even a day of observance in the U.S.

    Thats disgusting.

Actually, it was disease and germs that really killed off the native american population. Without them, colonization may never have gotten this far. Read 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by jared diamond.
