I like this album better than 'Illmatic'.
Don't cry, not all humans are sheep.
Anyway, I'd give it 8/10.

Quoting ≠ Agreement.
This album has some real contradicting reviews. Some Nas fans prefer it than illmatic and then some people say its absoloute shit. I think its a good solid album and suffers severly been the album after Illmatic. I doubt a hip hop album ever had to live up to that hype but it fared pretty well
For those who wanted to know the sample from the message is "Shape of my heart" by sting. Interestingly enough I quoted that song in my high school yearbook.
"A thug changes and love changes and best friends become strangers"
a really great album...its two years older than Illmatic, but the lyrics are like 10 years older....a classic, i love this album
Probably the same. An 8/10. They're both solid albums. Neither of them are anything particularly special to me. I wouldn't really say either album is "better" than the other. Just that I prefer 'It Was Written' to 'Illmatic'. Maybe it's because it's the first Nas album I got? Not sure, but I do enjoy it more than 'Illmatic'.
9.5-10 / 10
def a classic
I play this more than Illmatic.
Okay, a solid 8,5/10.
PROS:
+ excellent mafioso-inspired raps (even if they ain't about Mafia you still feel Escobar's POW in it).
+ lyrically much deeper and more emotional than pretty much anything he ever wrote
+ Havoc as producer in his prime (Set Up and Live Nigga Rap are MONSTERS!)
+ Dre at his early Aftermath phase (I dunno why everyone hates on him in that days, he was at his best up then)
+ If I Ruled the World - has commercial appeal and is still a street banger, DOPE SONG
CONS:
- some wack prods on the first half of album
- Street Dreams - infamous jacking of 2Pac beat
"The Devil is not the Prince of Matter; the Devil is the arrogance of the spirit, faith without smile, truth that is never seized by doubt. The Devil is grim because he knows where he is going, and, in moving, he always returns whence he came."
and another plus ---> the song I gave you power....one of the best songs ever
it would be an 8/10 but i haven't found myself going back to it like Illmatic, but i think there are a lotta albums around that era of hip-hop that you would give a similiar rating but you wouldn't give too much of a spin
^^I listen to it quite often... After my final exams I'ma make a grand mafioso mash-up, mid-90 shit, and Nas (especially It Was Written) plays quite a large role in my plans.

the message is one of nas' best songs ever and affirmative action and if i ruled the world alone give the cd some bangers, i give it 8.5/10. Def not better than illmatic (nothing is).
Yea, i agree, possibly one of Nas' best ever.
This album is good, but some of the songs have to grow on you.
But The message, I gave you power, Live Nigga rap, Take it in Blood, Affiirmative action are all great.
7.5 or 8....
Nothing Nas will ever do again can be Illmatic, so if he is chasing that high again, or trying to top it, or if fans are looking for it, they are just wasting their time.
