Funkdoobiest the trio made up of DJ Ralph M, Son Doobie and Tomahawk Funk came out during the early ninties with their great debut album "Which Doobie You Be?". Affiliated with Cypress Hill at the time, this latino group formed part of the trinity which also included House Of Pain.
Despite gaining critcal acclaim for their debut, Funkdoobiest always seemed to be unfairly looked upon as Cypress Hill clones due to the latin ethnicity, same group structure and close ties with DJ Muggs who pretty much fully produced this album and their debut. But the reality was that Funkdoobiest had their own style, yes they had the same group structure as Cypress (Ralph M/Muggs, T Funk/Sen-Dog, Son Doobie/B Real) but lead mc Son Doobie sounded nothing like B Real and T Funk was way superior to just be considered a gloryfied hype man.
Their debut was just a full on party album filled with adolesent humor and battle rhymes, not to belittle the album in anyway because for me it's a personal favourate but for me Brothas Doobie was the album where the group truly solidified themselves. Bringing a much more personal/introspective vibe, on tracks such as Rock On and Dedicated' Son Doobie and T Funk spit about the goings on of life in LA by higlighting the struggles of not just the gangbanger but the everyman too while commemorating those they knew that had fallen victim to the harsh realitys.
Of course Funkdoobiest ain't Fundoobiest without their party wild out girl crazy vibe with joints such as "Pussy Ain't Shit" and "XXX Funk" and others giving an altogether much more well rounded album providing more sustenance than their debut and their follow up.
On the production side the album like their first was executive produced by DJ Muggs who did most of the tracks including the standouts "Dedicated" "Lost In Thought" and "Superhoes" (which was also featured on Ice Cubes Friday OST). Other production credits include DJ Ralph M who co-produced alot of tracks with Muggs besides his own and one joint produced by DJ Lethal of House Of Pain and Limp Bizcuit fame.
I remember I couldn't put this album down when it came out and I still play it alot to this day. I will always say this is easily one of the most underated albums out of the westcoast. Funkdoobiest deserved to gotten futher in their careers but unfortunately they followed up with a weak album called Troubleshooters which until recently had ended their careers as a group. Son Doobie went on to release a couple of solo albums but I have confirmation that the group has reformed again and is preparing a new album to be released later in 08.
