forbidden kingdom takes the top on the weekend

It seems that age has had no ill effect on the success of THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Their $70 million film beat expectations and the competition in its opening weekend, earning $20.9 million according to studio estimates. This is the biggest opening ever for a martial arts movie in the U.S.

This is the biggest opening for a Jackie Chan film outside of his RUSH HOUR series and the biggest for Jet Li since LETHAL WEAPON 4. Jet Li’s FEARLESS was the last major martial arts movie released and it grossed $10.6 million in its opening weekend.
FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL, a rated-R romantic comedy from SUPERBAD producer Judd Apatow came in a close second with $17.3 million.

Iron man Sequel .....

Tony Stark's fancy boots are just now propelling him across screens in IRON MAN, but -- assuming the movie a buck or two -- a sequel is already in his hi-tech sights.
Paramount honcho Brad Grey has apparently stated that as long as the flick does "as well as expected" (and there's no reason to think it won't), the studio wants to get a sequel in theaters for the same May weekend in 2010.
Of course, IRON MAN isn't actually a Paramount movie -- it's Marvel's first self-financed project to hit screens, with Paramount distributing. But with the buzz so far, it's no great surprise they'd all want to get Downey back in the super-suit ASAP. Director Jon Favreau has already said he planned a loose structure for three movies, with Mandarin presumably making a villain appearance along the line.

Mel Gibson returns...

Mel Gibson has signed on to star in his first film since 2002's SIGNS and WE WERE SOLDIERS with the upcoming thriller EDGE OF DARKNESS. Gibson will star in the film as a police investigator whose daughter is killed. As he investigates, he begins to have visions of his daughter while uncovering cover-ups and espionage. The film is based on the 1985 BBC miniseries of the same name with William Monahan (THE DEPARTED) adapting the script. Martin Campbell CASINO ROYALE) will direct the film, which hasn't been set up at a studio yet. Though Gibson has come close to starring in films in the past six years (most notably UNDER AND ALONE for Antoine Fuqua), this is the first time he's actually taken the plunge. Variety posts an interesting stat that Mel Gibson films have grossed over $5 billion worldwide so it will be interesting to see if he still has that drawing power after his many controversies. Filming on DARKNESS is expected to begin this August in Boston.

Good news on some of the flicks coming up but theres a couple of things I need to address. Ok a sequel to 300??? Ummm I thought that was a one shot deal. I mean it's a great movie but...it's one of those movies that doesnt require a sequel. Michael Bay doing a Friday the 13th flick....I smell failure all the way. The A-Team flick sounds interesting. I'm liking the fact that Bale is doing the Terminator flick. He is becoming this generation's action star.

nice thread...
some of my thoughts on what ive read so far..
the friday the 13th hit rock bottom with "jason in space"... its gonna take a great film to redeem this once-legendary horror flick character...
the saw franchise is being stretched for every last dollar they can earn... saw 2 was the last good one in my opinion...
g.i.joe movie seems aimless... loved the shit as a kid, just hope this dont turn out like the street fighter movie with van damme... would be a damn shame..
always dug the transporter movies... j statham was made for this role... i still think he should have been agent 47 in the hitman movie...
a team movie?? seems hollywood feels its cool snatchin up every last tv show an flip it into a movie.. whats next, the smurfs?? starring will ferrell, jessica alba and david spade??
much like friday the 13th, if the 4th terminator is done right, i will look past.. if its done in a shoddy way, fuck it...
lookin forward to the new indiana jones flick... always thought this was harrison ford's best character over all his other shit, including han solo..
speed racer looks like a great theater flick, especially in an imax theater...
a sequel to 300 seems redundant to me..
and a sex and the city movie?? are you fucking kiddin me??? while we're at it, lets make a seinfeld movie.. throw in a baywatch thriller, maybe a home improvement flick and perhaps a 2 hour law and order movie.. give me a friggin break..
all in all, im lookin forward to a few movies that are either out or will be in the near future... but all these movies touchin on old tv shows/movies is gettin old.. is hollywood runnin out of movie plots?? jus some thoughts yall..

I'll check out The A Team movie. I was a fan of the tv show when i was a kid and i wanna get all the episodes on dvd because i haven't seen it in awhile. I've seen a couple of episodes on new network Sleuth. I didn't know The A Team was a cereal. I know that Mr T had a cereal and it tasted good. I wish i could buy it somewhere again online. I'll also check out The Transporter 3, Crank 2(i don't understand how they're gonna get Jason Statham to come back from the dead since he died in the first one hahahahahahahahahaha), Fast And Furious 4. I think Fast And Furious 4 will revive Vin Diesel's career because i thought he was gonna be the next action star. He should've been in the sequel to XXX. Eva Mendes should be in Fast And Furious 4 because it was nice seeing her in the 2nd one with her cute sexy self. I don't wanna see another Terminator without Arnold Schwarzenegger.

More Crank 2 News

The continuing improbable adventures of kinetic hitman Chev Chelios are currently underway with CRANK 2 now filming, and Jason Statham and co-star Amy Smart have been spotted on location. And in various states of dress.
The celeb-chasers at JFX Online got a candid look at Smart in a provocative outfit of tape -- check out a load of on-set snaps RIGHT HERE and a bit of footage RIGHT HERE.
That's not all -- The Superficial is hosting a whole series of pics with Smart violently contending with a mulleted Corey Haim (!!) and graciously revealing nipple and bum cheek, which are RIGHT HERE.
Meanwhile, Collider caught up with filmmakers/psychopaths Brian Taylor and Mark Neveldine, who revealed that they're shooting the flick on consumer-grade digital cameras. They discuss their fondness for the digital format and list the multitude of benefits RIGHT HERE.

Terminator to be PG 13?

Having a PG-13 DIE HARD movie was bad enough and now it looks like we'll have to sit through a PG-13 TERMINATOR.Production company Halcyon confirmed to Variety that they aim to deliver a PG-13 movie to Warner Bros. and by "aim to deliver" they mean that Warner Bros] told us to make a PG-13 movie otherwise they wouldn't touch it with a 10-ft. pole." In fact Halcyon head Derek Anderson says he never even discussed the possibility of a R-rated TERMINATOR with Warner Bros. Halcyon believes that they can "broaden" the film's audience without compromising the film's "gritty vision." But really, are teenagers the target audience for a TERMINATOR movie? In the end though it's all about money and things like a mass-market toy deal with Plamates Toys (finally you can have your Christian Bale Batman fight your Christian Bale John Connor!). In addition to Bale, the film stars Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood and Anton Yelchin. Filming on TERMINATOR SALVATION begins today in Los Angeles.

Descent 2 details

Get some clean shorts -- there's more deadly spelunking on the way in a sequel to THE DESCENT.
Writer-director Neil Marshall won't be returning to terrorize us, but he's got the first movie's editor Jon Harris now turning out the lights and presenting more comestibles for the cave-dwelling creeps.
He's not the only one coming back for more claustrophobic horror -- regardless of their fates in the original (depending on your perspective or which version you saw) actresses Shauna MacDonald and Natalie Mendoza will conspicuously be reprising their roles. The new story reportedly revolves around "the survivor forced back into the system of caves she battled her way out of in the first film, in a bid to locate the rest of her group." Interesting enough, although if it follows the standard horror sequel paradigm, a military or law enforcement presence is also likely...
Also starring in the modestly budgeted sequel (which I shall never refer to as THE DE2CENT) are fresh meals Gavan O'Herlihy, Joshua Dallas, Anna Skellern, Douglas Hodge and Krysten Cummings. Marshall is still overseeing the production.

Marvel Entertainment released their first quarter report to its shareholders this morning to coincide with the announcement about the success this past weekend of Marvel Studios' first production Iron Man, which grossed an estimated $100.7 million domestically and over $200 million worldwide.

The announcement included an update of Marvel Studios' feature film slate with the already-rumored Iron Man 2 announced for a release on April 30, 2010, followed by three more movies for the summers of '10 and '11. Matthew Vaughn's Thor is set for a release on June 4, 2010, and The First Avenger: Captain America (the working title) will kick off the summer of 2011 on May 6, followed by the highly-anticipated and foreshadowed The Avengers scheduled for July 2011. (Edgar Wright'sAnt-Man is also listed as being in development with no release date set.)

With that in mind, one can start expecting a lot more announcements in the coming months about creative teams and casting for those movies including who might direct the Captain America and Avengers movies. (Whomever plays Steve Rogers AKA Captain America presumably will be making two movies at once.)

this was taken from superhero hype

Anchorman 2>>>>

While attending a press conference for THE FOOT FIST WAY, Collider got the chance to speak to Adam McKay, who confirmed that he and Will Ferrell are indeed working on a sequel to ANCHORMAN. There's no word yet, but I hear Vicky Barrett, my high-school crush, might also be coming round to my house to tongue my balls. Since, you know, it's clearly wildest dreams coming true day.

Adam McKay: "Will and I are like let's do Anchorman 2. so you're talking like 2 years maybe we'll do it. But we're going to do it, for sure."

(Collider): "That's like 100%?"

Adam McKay: "Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're dying to do it. Unless we can't get the cast together, which is always kind of a tricky thing. But, I think, with that cast we're all friends, so yeah, we want to do it."

McKay said he might be doing a "sci-fi/BRAZIL type comedy" called CHANNEL 3 BILLION next, but after that it'll be time. Yeah, this is happening. Let's just hope Vince Vaughn and friends will get their asses in gear.

4th Mission for TC.....

it seems that Cruise is in talks with Paramount and developing a fourth MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie. Of course the news is being reported by Access Hollywood and Billy Bush so take it with a grain of salt but they claim they have "sources" that "confirmed" Cruise is "in talks." Of course talks is always a very nebulous phrase and could mean that some exec said, "Hey Tom, how about a fourth MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE movie?" And Tom Cruise replies, "Yeah, maybe..." Despite all the lunacy surrounding Tom Cruise off-screen, I still love the guy on-screen. Maybe I'm in the minority and maybe it's because he's one of the nicest actors I've ever met, but the guy could just as well launch a new franchise. Now if they talked about bringing David Fincher back to direct his script he originally intended for the third installment, maybe I'd be behind M:I:IV.

Macgyver movie?

He could assemble any three household items (and some duct tape, of course) and instantly manufacture a jetski, disarm a bomb or sexually satisfy any female viewer. Does MACGYVER also have the necessary skills to survive on the big screen? That's the rumor -- the popular TV show's creator Lee David Zlotoff attended the invention-focused Maker Faire and mentioned that he has plans to bring his resourceful gadget craftsman back in a MACGYVER feature film. No word on whether Richard Dean Anderson and his Swiss Army Knifecolor] survived 43 seasons of STARGATE to return to the franchise.
Don't get too excited just yet, fans of feathered hair and exaggerated (but MYTHBUSTER-tested) science -- while Zlotoff apparently has full control of the character rights, the flick is only in the "planning stages". It's also not the first time -- a potential MACGYVER feature has been mentioned since at least 2002. Still, the world might be ready for a hero who constructs rather than dismantles.

more iron man talks..even a 3rd

With its massive opening weekend, it wasn't a huge surprise that a sequel to IRON MAN was announced by Marvel yesterday. What is surprising, however, is that director Jon Favreau isn't already locked up for a second strike at the super suited Stark.
"We've been speaking informally about it, and in concept we would all love to work together again," Favs tells EW of what we all simply assumed. "There's no formal arrangement yet, but in theory we would all love to see it happen.... There's definitely a lot of ideas that we all have now. There's definitely a level of enthusiasm from myself and the cast to tell more stories."
Favreau also gives his thoughts on the AVENGERS movie ("I think it would be a very smart third film in the Iron Man series") and talks about how the "risk" of Downey paid off huge

another forbidden kingdom

Chinese media has reported that the Huayi Brothers, the Chinese co-producers of THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM intend to collaborate once again with Hollywood studios to shoot a sequel with all the principle Chinese characters returning (there is no mention of the Caucasian kid).

This decision comes after the film raked in $70 million worldwide within two weeks of release. This just happens to be the estimated budget. To date, THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM has earned $45 million in the U.S. since its initial release on April 4th.
A script has not been written yet and already there is some zany talk from Jet Li wanting the Monkey King to take on DC comic superheroes like Superman or Batman. It’s crazy, I know, but I love the idea. They ought to mix it up. That’s what THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM was all about. Throw east and west together and see what happens. Replace the kid with some worthy opponent for the Monkey King to battle and audiences could be in for one hell of a fantasy brawl. There are already rumors of planned Marvel superhero crossovers in film following the release of IRON MAN. Why not toss in Asian superheroes too? Let’s get Japan’s Ultraman and Goku added to the mix and go nutty!
In related news, FORBIDDEN KINGDOM producer Casey Silver wants to make another martial arts flick with either Jet Li or Chow Yun-fat in the lead. LEGEND OF LIN CHONG will feature one of the outlaw heroes from the Chinese literary classic “Water Margin.”

punkd the movie??????

Proving that Ashton Kutcher is at the very least an emissary of Beelzebub, his insipid prank show "Punk'd" went on to become a pop culture phenom. And now, of course, he's thinking about taking the concept to the big screen. Apparently, Mr. Beauty and the Geek had an epiphany about taking "Punk'd" to the cinematic masses while walking down the street in New York. As for how he plans to actually do it, he recently told Ryan Seacrest on KIIS-FM, "I got a plan. But if I reveal the plan then everyone's going to know when it's going down." Oooooh, aren't you mysterious!

Donnie darko 2????

I'm refusing to believe this is actually happening, but all evidence would seem to point to this story being true: S. DARKO, a sequel to DONNIE DARKO is about to start shooting, focusing on Donnie's little sister. The story picks up seven years after the first film when little Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions. Daviegh Chase reprises her role as Samantha Darko, with Justin Chatwin (WAR OF THE WORLDS) and Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl) joining the cast. And the of course, the icing on the cake: Producers have spoken to Richard Kelly about the project but he is not involved in any official capacity at this stage.

cruise meets denzel?

Buried at the bottom of an article in the new Entertainment Weekly (you know, the one with George W. and Laura Bush on the cover) about Tom Cruise working to revitalize his career is a brief snippet about what his next film might be. The magazine says that Cruise meets with WB head Jeff Robinov every three months to discuss potential projects and Robinov is currently in discussions with Cruise and Denzel Washington to star in the political thriller THE 28TH AMENDMENT. Written by TRANSFORMERS scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the film follows a president who comes to find out the United States is actually controlled by a super secret organization who will assassinate anyone who gets in its way. Mr. President realizes his newfound information puts him at the top of the Assassination List and must fight for his right to party. Philip Noyce (THE QUIET AMERICAN, PATRIOT GAMES) is directing for the studio. The film would be the first project together for uber A-listers Cruise and Washington should WB be able to close the deal (I'd imagine it'd cost a pretty penny to get those two involved). Washington is currently filming THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 for Tony Scott while Cruise is just maxin' and relaxin'.

side note..ironman # 1 this weekend..
