wow..could you explain why it looks like that and what exactly is going on besides the obvious breaking of the sound barrier
I really don't know why it looks like that. I thought that the breaking of the sound barrier would just bring a loud bang. There is only speculation on the net as to why this happens.

the white area is just water vapor. its a simple condensation effect, its all to do with the phenomenas that occur before you enter the supersonic stage of flight. Now during this process there is a great mixture of high and low pressure air. due to the fact that the volume of the particles being distributed out of the jet engine do not change, then the temperature of the low pressure air must drop. this drop in temperature results in the vapor cloud.Originally Posted by NickyTooch
