Hmmm, must be the Pen Tool (Freehand).
It's amazing how well and detailed you can cut an image with that. + it let's you draw things y'r self.
When I learned to use this tool I was on my way.
And yeah, as Mr.X says, LAYERS = Very important.

pen tool. best tool to cut out and I won't miss it doin web designs.
