Artist Sets Kurt Cobain Free: By Smoking His Ashes? Current Monday, 29 September 2008
Woah, if you’re like us, Nirvana had more than a slight impact on your development as an adolescent, and Kurt Cobain was integral in helping you develop a lil teen spirit of your own. Looks like artist Natascha Stellmach wants a bit of Cobain’s spirit as well because she’s planning on smoking his ashes.
Ok, try not to choke on your coffee, yes it’s true: Award winning Berlin based artist Natascha Stellmach will smoke the singer’s ashes as part of her latest exhibition, Set Me Free.
Stellmach has acquired the ashes of Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, and has transformed the grunge icon’s remains into an installation investigating suicide and the power of desecration.
Stellmach’s work in which the ashes of Cobain are rolled into a joint to be smoked at the completion of the exhibition, now claims an ephemeral place in the life story of the Grunge star. “This final act”, Stellmach said, “will release Cobain from the media circus and into the ether.” Hmm..sems to be increasing media coverage as of late, but whatever, right?
Stellmach's work comprises a "death cycle" of five pieces, and the conclusion presents a joint containing Cobain's ashes, which is held in an antique case engraved with the work's title (seen above.)
Stellmach intends to smoke this joint at a secret Berlin location with patrons of her work. It represents both the completion of the conceptual project and the final act in an exhibition bound to provoke wide public debate.
Asked how she came to have Cobain's ashes, let alone smoke them, Stellmach has said, "That's confidential and kind of magic. They came to me. And I am setting him free.” Magic Kurt Cobain joints? Hell yeah, this is one of the many reasons why we love art. Puff on, Natascha.
Set Me Free, until October 11, at Gallerie Wagner + Partner, Berlin. More at galerie-wagner-partner.com
