--Va. woman devours 181 chicken wings in NY contest

NEW YORK – The Black Widow of eating contests gobbled up nearly 181 chicken wings in 12 minutes, devouring the national championship record in Buffalo on Sunday.

"I'm so happy!" said Sonya Thomas, who ate 4.86 pounds of chicken wings to win the contest, besting world eating marvel Joey Chestnut at the ninth annual National Buffalo Wing Festival.

Buffalo, about 300 miles northwest of New York, is said to be the birthplace of the wings, typically fried and covered in tangy vinegar and hot sauce.

Chestnut, America's No. 1 professional eater, was favored to win Sunday's competition. He came in second after eating 169 chicken wings, or 4.55 pounds.

This was the first time Thomas, of Alexandria, Va., and Chestnut, of San Jose, Calif., faced off in a chicken wing eating contest. They went at it "neck and neck," said Drew Cerza, the founder of the festival, which was inspired by the 2001 Bill Murray comedy "Osmosis Jones," about a compulsive eater.

"They pushed each other really hard," Cerza said. "Joey is so strong. He's got great jaw strength. But Sonya's so fast with the hand."

Thomas, who's 5 feet tall and weights 105 pounds, calls herself the Black Widow because she often defeats bigger male competitors — Chestnut is 6-foot-2 and weights 230 pounds — in eating contests. She set the previous wings record in 2005, when she ate 174 in 12 minutes.

She also previously set eating records for oysters, hard-boiled eggs, cheesecake and jalapeno peppers. She won her first competitive eating event in 2003.

The sprightly 43-year-old said she owed Sunday's triumph to her fancy finger work.

"Sometimes if I try to chew too much I slow down," she said. "I used my hands more than the mouth."

During the public contest, in front of thousands of people, she twirled the wings in her small fingers while quickly tearing off the meat with her teeth and lips.

Her cheeks were covered in a sheen of orange Buffalo sauce by the end.

But she said she was still hungry afterward, calling the wings "an appetizer." About an hour later, she made a guest appearance in the Ridiculously Hot Buffalo Wing Eating Contest and ate 20 more.

"The hottest wings!" she said. "I had to drink a lot of water."

I'm a little behind on the Wing Bowl for this year, sorry. I'll get there.

--Chestnut Downs 62 At Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, But A Lady Steals The Show

Joey Chestnut could teach us all a thing or two about consistency, not to mention the most absurd kind of gluttony.

Chestnut, 27, from San Jose, Calif., won his fifth consecutive Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest Monday by plowing through 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes. That was good enough to win by nine franks over second-place chow artist Patrick Bertoletti.

Asked how he was doing afterward, Chestnut remarked that he felt "great!"

Who wouldn't after ingesting 20,000 calories?

More significantly, for the first year ever, we have a women's contest wiener -- er, winner. Sonya "Black Widow" Thomas put away 40 hot dogs, which had to come as little surprise to competitive eating fans. (Yes, they exist.) The Black Widow downed a personal best of 41 in 2009.

Thomas won by a larger margin than Chestnut, with her closest competitor, Juliet Lee, finishing with 29 1/2 hot dogs consumed.

Chestnut and Thomas each walked away with $10,000 and a championship belt.

Of course the purists will argue that the event wasn't the same without Takeru Kobayashi, who won the event six consecutive years (2001-2006) before finishing second to Chestnut three times.

Kobayashi was ineligible to compete at Nathan's for the second year in a row because he refuses to sign a contract with Major League Eating, the governing body of competitive eating. Last year he showed up in a "Free Kobi" T-shirt and rushed the stage after Chestnut won. He was then dragged away and issued a handful of charges that were later dropped.

This year, Kobayashi staged a one-man event at a Manhattan restaurant at the same time flanked by TV screens showing the Nathan's contest in Brooklyn and ate 69.

Chestnut set the official Nathan's record of 68 in 2009. Major League Eating has said it will not recognize Kobayashi's 69 because it did not occur in a competition.

Chestnut had a similar sentiment, telling CNN: "It was no different than what I do at practice on my own and I'm able to break a record at my house."

--Black Widow eats 183 chicken wings in NY contest

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Black Widow of eating contests has scarfed down 183 chicken wings in 12 minutes to break her own world record set last year in Buffalo, N.Y.

Sonya Thomas took home first place Sunday at the tenth annual National Buffalo Wings Festival. She beat eating marvel Joey "Jaws" Chestnut, who came in second with 174 wings.

The two won titles at the July Fourth hot dog eating contest on Coney Island.

The 100-pound Thomas of Alexandria, Va., is the reigning wing-eating champion. She downed 181 wings to win the 2010 contest. Chestnut of San Jose, Calif., settled for second with 169 wings.

The winner gets $1,500. The runner-up wins $750, and third place gets $300.

Thomas is called the Black Widow becomes she often beats male competitors in eating contests.

    --Man dies after dumpling-eating contest

Kiev - A Ukrainian man died on Tuesday shortly after winning a dumpling-eating contest, the Interfax news agency reported.

The victim was described in the report as a retiree aged 77 living in the village of Tokmak, in Ukraine's eastern Zaporizhia region.

He became ill within minutes of taking first prize in a contest on consuming varenniki, a steamed dumpling considered one of Ukraine's most traditional foods.

Contest organisers were unable to revive him after he lost consciousness. It was unclear how many dumplings the man ate.

An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of his death.

Ukrainian varenniki typically are stuffed with cabbage, potatoes, mushrooms or cherries.

Most Ukrainian families eat varenniki only during holidays as much time is needed to prepare the dumplings, and because they are considered very filling.

-Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest Won By Joey Chestnut For 7th Time

-Sonya Thomas, aka "The Black Widow," successfully defended her title in the women's event in an unexpectedly close battle.

The annual Nathan's hot-dog eating contest was a cake walk for six-time defending champing Joey Chestnut who downed 69 frankfurters and buns in 10 minutes for his seventh consecutive victory.

The only competition came from Matt Stonie. The second place finisher consumed 51 dogs and buns at the Coney Island battle of intestinal fortitude.

The 210-pound competitive eating titan known as "Jaws" broke his own record of 68 franks, which he set in 2009 and tied again last year.

Chestnut, 29, was expected to easily defend his title. Supporters carried him to the stage before the event in a mustard-yellow chair like an Egyptian pharaoh.

Sonya Thomas, aka "The Black Widow," successfully defended her title in the women's event in an unexpectedly close battle. Thomas, who weighs 100 pounds, ingested 36 and three quarters franks to edge out second place finisher Juliet Lee, who ate 36.

It's the 97th annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest.

In the world of competitive eating, the Nathan's hot dog eating contest is the gut-busting and artery-clogging equivalent of the Super Bowl. It's by far, the most coveted eat-off.

The contest, organized by Major League Eating, attracts huge crowds to Nathan's iconic frankfurter stand near the Coney Island boardwalk

Coney Island, actually a peninsula at the southern end of Brooklyn, was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy last fall.

Announcers on ESPN 2 heralded the event's return to the storm-damaged area the way other sports broadcasters said the New Orleans Saints Super Bowl title in 2010 helped the Big Easy heal years after Hurricane Katrina.

    I feel for humanity.

So many starving people in the world
And you got this kinda thing going on.

Back in the day my mother would say "Don't Play With Your Food"
Food is and should be a privilege - not turned into a game or to entertain.

I mean what do you actually get out of watching it or taking part ?

    I don't know man....maybe it's just me ?

Wait a minute, if it's regulated it makes it a sport? Well that makes your thread about sports that should not be considered sports obsolete, because they are regulated too.
