Growin up project-struck, lookin for luck dreamin
Scopin the large niggaz beamin, check what I'm seein
Cars, ghetto stars pushin ill Europeans
G'n, heard about them old timers OD'n
Young, early 80's, throwin rocks at the crazy lady
Worshippin every word them rope rockin niggaz gave me
The street raised me up, givin a fuck
I thought Jordan's and a gold chain was livin it up
I knew the dopes, the pushers, the addicts everybody
Cut out of class, just to smoke blunts and drink Notty
Ain't that funny? Gettin put on to crack money
With all the gunplay, paintin the kettle black hungry
A case of beers in the staircase I wasted years
Some niggaz went for theirs, flippin coke as they career
But I'm a rebel stressin, to pull out of the heat no doubt
With Jeeps tinted out, spendin never holdin out

    ????

Really? It's a story about being Esco. Helps the album to get on it's course.

obviously you think its corny, he's attacking the world's problems with a childlike mentality, I can't hate though, i quoted The Message in my yearbook

No, that's not corny, that's retarded.

Wera is right, Nas is worst when he tries to be political and best when he's telling ammoral stupid project stories. Another case of wrong yes-men.

And he should stick to classic sampled beats.

"I thought Jordan's and a gold chain was livin it up"

That line was sick...he's looking from a child's point of view, thats the point...

Close this thread, the dre song was the worse track from the album

Its a stupid song yeah, like 'New World' off 'Nastradamus'. But theres tracks like 'Street Dreams', 'Suspect' and 'Watch Dem Niggas' which is some of the most beautiful poetry that a rapper ever did. Its frustrating though that he can do stuff that differs so wildly in intelligence.

Nah, you're wrong. He's consistently intelligent in his raps, he's just good when he doesn't try to use that intelligent to deliver any kind of message, 'cause his opinions are retarded.

He's basically one of those intellectuals you'd wish to keep their mouth shut.

^^ "The Set Up" or "Shootouts"? I like them songs for beats.

It Was Written ain't that much of an album anyway. And Nas wasn't ignorant on Illmatic, he proved there he's literate and smart enough to make nimble verses with lots of overt/covert references. He's stupid only when he tries to make a difference with his words.

It Was Written is his second best effort, but you could see that he went a different route
