Default [update] Looks Like THOR Has Been Cast

Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and director Kenneth Branagh have found their Thor and it's Chris Hemsworth, who millions have now seen playing George Kirk in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. At the same time, the 25-year-old Australian actor, who got his start on the popular local television show "Home and Away," is also reported to play the lead in MGM's remake of Red Dawn, taking over the role of Jed Eckert, originally played by Patrick Swayze. (A MGM representative has confirmed with CS that Hemsworth will be playing the role in Dan Bradley's Red Dawn.)

    UPDATE:
Variety confirms that Hemsworth is in final negotiations for the role of Thor, and Nikki says that Marvel will be releasing a press release announcing the casting, as well as other casting for the movie sometime tonight.

You can read Nikki's report on how and why Hemsworth got the role (and who he was in competition with) over on Deadline Hollywood Daily

I don't really know what to say about this guy, I couldn't really tell much of him in Star Trek and I never watched Home & Away. He looks better fit to play Captain America than Thor but I dunno, I think i'll have to wait until I see him in better context.

I haven't seen Star Trek yet, but I hope he does a good job as Thor. Marvel hit a homerun with Robert Downey Jr. as IRONMAN, considering that Tom Cruise was reportedly after the IRONMAN role too, I'm glad Downey Jr. got the part. Now let's see who they pick as Captain America.

Supposedly he is 6'3 so if he is indeed cast to play Thor he'll be tall enough atleast.

Official Press Release From Marvel Regarding The Casting Of Loki

Waiting for the movie hammer to fall, Thor fans? So are we! Verily!

And we're getting so much closer because now we know who Thor will be facing off against and that's Tom Hiddleston as the trickster Loki!

Marvel Studios announced today Hiddleston has been cast as the villain Loki in the highly anticipated movie "Thor." Kenneth Branagh will direct the film penned by Mark Protosevich and Ashley Miller & Zak Stentz.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce the film. The film will be released in the U.S. on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of super hero: "Thor." This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

"Thor" reunites Hiddleston with Branagh, with whom he worked on the London production of Chekhov's "Ivanov." The talented actor and Branagh also starred together in the BBC miniseries "Wallander."

Hiddleston's credits also include "Othello," in which he starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor at the Donmar Warehouse, and he played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's "The Gathering Storm."

In 2008, Hiddleston was nominated twice for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer – for his role in Othello" and for his role in "Cymbeline." He won the award for the latter.

In addition to "Thor," Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 2" on May 7, 2010, "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011, and "The Avengers" on May 4, 2012.

Kenneth Branaugh directing? What is this William Shakespeare's Thor? Nobody should get too excited over this choice.

^^^^um, have you ever read a thor comic or seen their speech patterns? plus the whole saga with thor, loki, odin, and even balder is reminiscent of macbeth or titus.

not the first choice that would've come to mind, but makes sense to me.
