No doubt, dope Sci-Fi Noir ... one of Alex Proyas' best films. The first time I heard of David S. Goyer (Screenwriter). Also, you gotta love Jennifer Connelly as the Jazz Singer.

^^^co-sign, the visual style and aesthetic of the film are really good, and sutherland does well as the creepy scientist...i feel like it kind of falls apart in the third act but it's definitely an underrated film.

Check the similarities between Dark City and Matrix, very similar and after watching DC for the first time the other week I definitly noticed that it was "Matrix-esque". Though certainly Dark City isn't the be all end all of Sci Fi flicks and they certainly didn't set the bar on what one should look like -- still -- I get the feeling that Matrix is Dark City Remix with bigger budget. And the storylines are by far brother and sister.

It's a good premise with an absolutely god awful ending. Maybe someday someone will come up with a way to make telekinetic battle look cool, but this movie failed hard.

^^^exactly...and the score during those segments doesn't help at all; it's sad really that the mood and very deliberate pacing of the film up to that point is compromised in favor of a generic 'mass destruction' style ending.

and as far as the matrix comparisons, that is complete obvious to anyone that has seen both films, and at the same time the concepts aren't original at all anyway, these are science fiction cliches dating back to the pulp era--the only thing that changes are the science and technology used as a basis for the storyline.

They both bit the shit out of Ghost in The Shell regardless...

And Pandemic -- name me some movies that Ghost in The Shell, Dark City and Matrix bit from in your opinion -- I might have to check them out

^^^blade runner and brazil on an aesthetic level, and the 'subjective perception' 'what is real' angle

in terms of literature: the works of philip k dick, theodore sturgeon, alfred bester, and william gibson

i'll probably think of more but this is what immediately leapt to mind.

    ^^^brazil is feature length

and i know we're talking movies here dude but science fiction was a literary genre first, and that tends to be where the best ideas are derived

escape from new york isn't even in the same class as blade runner, but that's your opinion...speaking of john carpenter, perfect example would be the film 'the thing'--as well as being a remake of 'the thing from another world' it was ripped off wholesale from 'who goes there?' by john campbell, a 30s science fiction author. and 'in the mouth of madness' steals from a smattering of hp lovecraft stories.
