Beneath The Surface without a doubt. It's a classic album

"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth" (Rev. 3:15-16)

I could never get in to Beneath The Surface. No idea why. To this day it's probably my least favourite / least listened to GZA album. I listen to Legend of the Liquid Sword more than this... and Pro Tools... and Grandmasters is a classic!

I'd definitely take Black Out! over BTS.

    Peace!

    1) Uncontrolled Substance

    2) Beneath The Surface (minus the skits = tie for the number one spot)

    3) Wu-Syndicate : a debut I started to appreciate more and more over the years, mostly to a lot of well deserved positive feedback on the album by members on here. I remember the album not doing too much for me when I bought it but over the years it has shown great replay value.

    4) Blackout!

    5) Manchild or Immobilarity without the bonus tracks

    5) Immobilarity (with those blah tracks at the end)

    6) Golden Arms Redemption

    7) N**** Please

Blackout works well as a hiphop album in general. If we were to order all of these albums as hiphop albums in general I'd give Blackout! a spot in the top 2. But above is my Wu list for 1999

It's a shame we didn't get to hear more from DJ Devastator (producer on Wu-Syndicate), he was nice with it

N***** Please works well as a party album and definitely has its own style.

GAR has a few hit or miss tracks and is not as solid as a lot of the other solo debuts. There's some great (group) efforts on there too, though. Leathaface (sp?) is a standout too.

While I would not consider any of the albums above bad albums (GAR is iffy in places though) clearly early 1999 was not a top year for the Wu. 1998 was as stronger year, with the double whammy of Tical 2000 and In Stereo in November. I remember buying those 2 albums on the same day and enjoying the hell out of them. Tical 2000 without the endless skits is such a dope and hardcore album. In Stereo on the other hand had great atmospheric skits (I loved the different languages type thing) and bonus tracks that really earned their place on the album.

Wu-Syndicate by far. All fire Beats by Devastator. Album flows well and Myalansky was on fire at this time. I'd put BTS behind it, good album with some useless skits and some questionable beats like "Stringplay" and still upset they cut Hell Razah from "Crash Your Crew" He bodied that verse. 3rd would be Uncontrolled Substance, not INS best rhymes but still a solid piece of work.
Only a few years ago Hip Hop purists may have felt superior listening to hard core while their less enlightened companions snacked on commercial rap. As Shaolin research began to point out the overwhelming benefits of raw production, true hip hop enthusiasts started turning back to traditional styles. Wu-Tang in particular, has been shown to myriad beneficial effects, from warding off ignorance and poverty to reducing the risk of incarceration and death.

OH SHIT!! I forgot about Nigga Please! That is defs top of my list! Such a great album from start to finish. There's only really the joint with Lil' Mo that I tend to skip.

Definitely Nigga Please number 1 for me, followed by Black Out!

    Peace!

Skits on BTS are so annoying. And I was still buying cassettes then so couldn’t just skip. I haven’t listened to most of these in awhile. I always liked U-God’s debut so I would choose this. BTS and Wu-Syndicate get some votes too. Blackout was good but I always favored the Wu sounding tracks but wasn’t enough of them. Uncontrolled is good but should have been way better. And Immobilarity was the biggest letdown maybe in history of rap for me considering this was his follow up to Cuban Linx. Peace

Crazy how everyone has a different choice what the best Wu album was that year.

Uncontrolled Substance would have been #4 for me.

Neither Legend of the Liquid Sword nor Pro Tools even come close to Beneath the Surface in my opinion. The only thing wrong with BTS was the corny skits and the album being too short.

Grandmasters I can see as a valid argument.
