Looking, acting, and speaking professionally may seem like "acting white" to somebody who has no sense, pride, or education, but to the rest of us it is what is expected in a professional setting. It's not "acting white" because whites don't have a monopoly on professionalism and proper articulation. That's an implication of inherent ignorance amongst blacks.

White people can be VERY unprofessional, yet no one says they're "acting white" when they are not acting like poor uneducated fools. I currently work in a hospital where I am definitely the only black guy employed by them, though they have Indian and a couple of Latin American staff (I'm Afro-Latino). Everyday I deal with ghetto azz white people with no sense, and some have the audacity to treat me like I'm the one who's out of place.

I was dealing with a vendor a few months ago who had been ripping off the hospital. He was in my office and got up in my face (a short white guy), and said "Who the fuck do you think you are? I'll just as soon take your ass out back! Who are you trying to fuck with?"

Two courses of action here:

1- Me (the professional) flips into Mangani and beats this muthafucka down. I lose my job, go to jail for assault, and support the stereotype of an aggressive and mindless black man trying to act like a professional.

2- I stay quiet. Get on the phone with security, and ask them to escort an unruly vendor out of the hospital. The vendor refuses to leave and the police are called in. He makes statements supporting my story, and is banned from any of the hospitals owned by the company I work for. He loses his job and so does his regional manager. I receive praise for remaining calm, collected, and professional, and for exposing the vendor who had been stealing from our facility in the first place.

I'm sure some un-employed dumb muthafuckas would say take course of action #1. But then, I'm on my way to building a multi-million dollar company, and you're "keeping it real"...

Is this a common problem among blacks and for those that don`t know A coconut is what other blacks call sell out blacks, or basically it is "a black person who acts white" so they are black on the outside and white on the inside just like a coconut..Now im not saying that all black people have to be gangsta and talk like they are from the hood, but it just seems to me that alot of blacks, are forced to act really white, to get ahead in life... this is more prevelant in the movie industry or on television...Yet you don`t see any other cultures forced to act like this to get ahead in life like indians, arabs, asians ect.... these people seem to retain a strong scense of identity and culture even in a western societies, yet the same doesn`t apply to blacks, who for some reason are forced to give up there culture and act like the white man to get where they need to be.

we were taught by our parents to look and sound Docile in the professional arena and at the job interview - to look non threatening - this is what we had to do to gain the trust of some white professional - another reason why Black Women get the Job quicker than a Black Man - less of a threat
