mad libs mad creative
madvillainy was one of the most creative albums of all time
having alot of records doesnt make you a legendary producer lol. and it doesnt make you creative.
if you gave a 1000 people, no wait not even people, if you gave a 1000 other average hip hop producers the same catalogue of vinyl Madlib works from, it wouldnt make them madlib.
youve obviously never had eperiance in sampling from vinyl and the nuances thats involved in sampling, and sampling from vinyl. Not only have you got to notice the right part (were not just talking about breaks with madlib), youve gotta know all the technical details on how to bring the best out of it. you gotta know how to mix it right, get the levels right. and most importantly pick the best part.
its possible to make 100 songs from one vinyl, all sounding different.
oh and J Dilla is in my list and Prince Paul for sure.
dilla comes to mind first ... his drums are never where they are techincally supposed 2 be ... but for some reason it works
yeah madlibs sample selection is one of the best! dude got ill ears, lol
he even said that most producers are ruining their loops by adding stupid stuff and/or chopping them up bad...but i still wish he would "flip" his samples more
the bomb squad, prince paul, danger mouse, wooly noggins
Primo, Pete Rock, Alchemist, RZA, Rick Rubin and Dr. Dre, in that order.
onra
I've got an interview of him from about 4 years ago, he's talkin about using the SP1200 to make The Bridge Is Over, the art of sampling and the Substitution break.
Check it out here.
blockhead, aesop rock, mighty mi, j-zone, rza, true master... soo many to name!
RZA in the mid-'90s took the production game to whole new levels of creativity, and still to this day the man has produced around 20 full albums - more or less all of them featuring an exclusive style modified for the artist or vibe he's working on. i wish he started using the sampler more again but he can still lace incredible joints as the "Afro Samurai" soundtracks and "8 Diagrams" proved.
Prince Paul is also one of the most creative producers i know of, from the way he flipped mad samples per song on the early De La Soul shit to how he just went mad grimy and hardcore for the Gravediggaz LP. getting tired of the traditional hip-hop album he gave us the instrumental "Psychoanalysis" followed up by the incredible 'plays-like-a-flick' LP "Prince Amongst Thieves". and last year he gave the world the first children story in the form of a hip-hop album - wow!
daily updates: news, articles, reviews, the best compilations on the net. that true skool street hop!
r.i.p. Johan D, Kaddu, Ricke a.k.a. "Slick Rick" and the rest of the fallen soldiers - you'll never be forgotten!
Madlib & Oh No are running shit at the minute IMO.
And their levels of output is CRAAAZY!!! Dudes must never stop!
Oh, and Dilla... just because Ruff Draft is one of my ALL TIME PERSONAL FAVOURITES!!! Absolute classic!
Peace!
