Yeah but the smoke is proof and truth. Until a belief is backed up by smoke it is still just that, a belief. Not truth.
When there is a sense of urgency and the risk of loss of life such as the case of a fire it would be wise to act without solid proof. Not all beliefs are the same and in some cases they are dumb.

if someones in the theatre with you and yells FIRE from their seat, and you're look at the same theatre as them and there's no fire around then ppl will just look around and then tell him to shut up or shhh
if he runs in and yells fire ppl will check then run, but the checking is always gonna happen.
ppl want to confirm things before they react, or entertain their curiosity
yelling fire used to be a "don't check. just go" type deal.
thats why it was quasi-illegal to do it, because it caused unnecessary panic if there wasn't a fire.
so i guess i'm asking, what changed?
why do we no longer take people's word for it in the face of danger but on the other hand will take all kind of other shit at face value?

i say it changed because the masses used to look at everyone as a whole, but now its all about the individual. therefore someone yelling fire today we see as most likely a nut trying to entertain himself, rather than a member of the group trying to help the whole.
