thanks for the post
RIP to a pioneer. I remember i first heard about Gangstarr when i was like 11 but didn't listen to anything by the group until i was about 15 and heard Above The Clouds on the wu compilation album. Shit blew my fucking mind, i must have wrote 100 rhymes to that beat and started digging around for more Gangstarr.
never became a HUGE fan but there's a solid enough bulk of songs i like from Guru and Primo and a shit load of ideas and inspiration i got from listening to their music
but deck KILLED him on that shit tho LOL. no for real.
If deck didn't murder him on that track he'd be alive today
I wouldnt go as far to say Deck killed him, I'd say deck got the upper hand cause his delivery was more energetic but the message guru and the stuff he was saying in that have always stuck out to me more than Deck's verse straight up. the line:
"word to the father and mother earth, seeking everlasting life through this hell for what it's worth"
^ that line gets me everytime and I'm not even religious at all, i just got what he was saying.
"Heed the words its like ghetto style proverbs, the righteous pay a sacrifice to get what they deserve"
these lines are just fuckin sick and have stuck with me since I first heard this track 10 years ago. i'm still upset about him passing but for real Guru was actually 48 years old not 43. Tony Toca had the Gang Starr lawyer (94 - 2004) on his show on tuesday and he admitted that guru was actually 48!!! so he did live an almost full life it was cut short by probably 20 years or so. Still R.i.P. to a legend and fuck solar
I also remember when I first heard some gang starr had to be like 92. I always enjoyed their music. GURU was not the best emcee in the world but he was mos def nice. I was listening to Moment of Truth earlier today and shit is nice. Respect due pa!
