AZ - Not really a fan besides Doe or Die and his features. Can't name anything memorable he's done in the last decade
Canibus - Same as AZ. Never been that big a fan.
DMX - Hasn't been relevant since 05 so I don't think he qualifies
Eminem - Only bad steps he's taken were Encore and Recovery (and some parts of Relapse) imo so he's a contender.
Ghostface Killah - Again, only mis-step he's taken imo were The Wizard of Poetry.
Ill Bill - Very strong contender. Can't name a "bad" album from him in the last decade. Alot of his best material was released in that time frame.
Immortal Technique - Great material but is too inconsistent. If he were to have dropped more material he may have had the title imo.
Jay-Z - my favorite Jay-Z material is from '01 - '07. After that he fell off.
Kanye - Two classic albums halfway thru the decade, one bangin album in '07 and one wack album that can't even be classified as hip hop in '08.
Killah Priest - Not a fan besides Heavy Mental so my opinion on him isn't really relevant.
Lil Wayne - He was good until the Carter III. After that he was wack so he's not a contender imo. His material from '03 - '06 was great though.
MF Doom - One of the strongest discographies of the bunch. One of the top contenders imo.
One Be Lo - Again, have yet to hear something bad from him. Another strong contender.
P.O.S. - Never got into him. Someone put me on cause I hear good things.
R.A. the Rugged Man - To my knowledge he dropped like one album last decade of new material. Legendary Classics was basically re-mastered old shit. Good shit though. Can't be a contender for me though for that reason. One album isn't enough I need more.
Royce da 5'9" - Only solo album of his I have is Street Hop. It's great but I can't say he was top of the decade until I hear more material from him.
Sean Price - Didn't drop new material until about '04-05 (to my knowledge) so I can't really say he's the best of the ENTIRE decade but I will say that he has had an amazing run since Donkey Sean Jr. One of my favorite emcees.
All that being said I think MF Doom takes it imo. Between him and One Be Lo.
Any vote outside of Eminem is wrong. It's not up for debate, the 2000's was Eminem.
He's not the best MC on the list and he's not my favourite by FAR, but he owned this decade.
It's fucking laughable Canibus, Ghostface, RA The Rugged Man and KILLAH FUCKING PRIEST have more votes than him. Ask anyone who Em is and they'll know, go ask them who killah Priest is
Teachin Da SeedZ
this thread isnt about who is more relevant or popular though its about their lyrical merits.
if youre talking about lyrics- canibus/KP/ and RA are inevitably gonna come up-thats not to say eminem hasnt got skills
peace
Lyrically i would say that either Eminem or One Be Lo is my favorite. But im going to give the vote to One Be Lo because no one else will. lol.
"This is how I represent I rock the mic 110 percent
It's intimate, I keeps the party moving like a imigrant
Binary Star, superstar its no coincidence
Every verse is intricate, this ain't a circus in a tent
We don't get down like them clowns and the kids
I'm use to being indegent, who said its all about the Benjamin's?
I wanna fortune, I wanna make music and hit the lottery
Fortunately my music is never watery
That's how its gotta be, as far as I can see
Maybe you should grab a telescope to see my veiw its like astronomy
It aint all about economy
so the fact that these wack emcees is making G's don't bother me
Honestly, my number one policy is quality
never sell my soul is my philosophy
High velocity, lyrics like Nastradamus make a prophecy
I told you cats a long time a go it ain't no stoppin' me
I bomb your set that's not a threat its a promise
Got everybody ridin' on my wagon like the Amish
But still I never claim to be a big rap star
So no matter who you are its still Allah who act God
Better believe this, most rappers can't achieve this
I'm bad to the bone but x-rays can't even see this
See I'm strategic I letcha money talk bullshit walk
While I keep it rollin' like parapalegics
Whoever's on the microphone let it be known
You in danger, I got next(necks) like the Boston Strangler
You ain't never heard an emcee speak like this
And Rodney King ain't never felt a beat like this"
Eminem, Ghost, Doom..
..
why isnt nas on there?
he dropped some great albums.
stillmatic
untitled
god's son
hip hop is dead
lost tapes (yeah i know it was recorded in the 90's but still)
anyway, i dont see how jay-z doesnt take this one??
he basically became the undisputed emperor of hip hop this past decade, and he dropped some great albums
the blueprint
american gangster
the black album
the blueprint 3 (but i seem to be the only one that loves that album!)
"anyway, i dont see how jay-z doesnt take this one?? "
Sure he got a good catalog but lyrically he can not match rappers like One Be Lo. He said it himself:
"I dumbed down for my audience and doubled my dollas.
They criticize me for it, but yet they all yell 'holla'.
If skills sold, truth be told
I'd probably be, lyrically, Talib Kweli.
Truthfully, I wanna rhyme like Common Sense,
But I did 5 mil, I ain't been rhymin' like Common since.""
Immortal Technique made hip-hop legit again, so it's him
