Football Games Have 11 Minutes of Action

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...055561406.html

Football fans everywhere are preparing to settle in for the NFL's biggest and most electric weekend of the season—a four-game playoff marathon that will swallow up at least 12 hours of broadcast time over two days.
But here's something even dedicated students of the game may not fully appreciate: There's very little actual football in a football game.

According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes.
In other words, if you tally up everything that happens between the time the ball is snapped and the play is whistled dead by the officials, there's barely enough time to prepare a hard-boiled egg. In fact, the average telecast devotes 56% more time to showing replays.
So what do the networks do with the other 174 minutes in a typical broadcast? Not surprisingly, commercials take up about an hour. As many as 75 minutes, or about 60% of the total air time, excluding commercials, is spent on shots of players huddling, standing at the line of scrimmage or just generally milling about between snaps. In the four broadcasts The Journal studied, injured players got six more seconds of camera time than celebrating players. While the network announcers showed up on screen for just 30 seconds, shots of the head coaches and referees took up about 7% of the average show.
If you think the networks are a little too fond of cheerleaders, you may be mistaken: In these broadcasts, only two networks showed cheerleaders at all. And when they did, they were only on camera for an average of three seconds. "We make it a point to get Dallas cheerleaders on, but otherwise, it's not really important," says Fred Gaudelli, NBC's Sunday Night Football producer. "If we're doing the Jets, I couldn't care less."
Football—at least the American version—is the rare sport where it's common for the clock to run for long periods of time while nothing is happening. After a routine play is whistled dead, the clock will continue to run, even as the players are peeling themselves off the turf and limping back to their huddles. The team on offense has a maximum of 40 seconds after one play ends to snap the ball again. A regulation NFL game consists of four quarters of 15 minutes each, but because the typical play only lasts about four seconds, the ratio of inaction to action is approximately 10 to 1. (At the end of a game, if one team has a lead and wants to prevent the other team from scoring again, standing around and letting the clock run down becomes a bona fide strategy).

there was just an epic NHL game on NBC, Capitals vs Penguins, featuring the 2 premier players in the league.....Crosby had 2 goals and Ovechkin had a hat trick including setting up the game winner in overtime...

but we are all hyped to watch 11 MINUTES (!!!) total of football action and over an hour of fat dudes standing around with their hands at their sides...

further evidence that this country is in a stupor..

I think baseball is only like 3 minutes of action, still my favorite sport though.

I'm in Hanoi now and can't find the Super Bowl on TV. There is however 3 games of European kickball, US snowboarding, golf, and car racing. So I'm left to check online for crappy delayed updates. I don't blame Hanoi, I blame the greedy fucks at the NFL.

baseball's my favorite sport too but i think you'd be amazed how much action there actually is if they ever did a study..

cuz baseball has no clock and therefore the game does not proceed WITHOUT the action....unlike football where they stand there and the clock runs..

there's definitely a shitload of standing in baseball but there's also a total of about 300 pitches thrown in a 2 hour game (so more than 2 per minute), probably half of which result in a situation where almost everybody on the field runs around and does something...

the problem with baseball and what makes it boring is when pitchers take their time between each pitch, batters step outta the box, and managers make 10 pitching changes....it brings the action to a halt.....if they were just out there tossing pitch-after-pitch without taking their time, you'd never hear anyone regard baseball as "boring"

But in Footballs defense, its the most intense sport there is in terms of physical contact and exertion of energy.

To me, the onside kick that started the second half is why football is so great. Those motherfuckers were goin at that ball, you could he it was like a riot down there, guys piled up, dudes shoving, all over the field.

You don't get that kind of all out intensity in any sport but football.

I can't jump on the hate on football bandwagon that is popular here. Its a great game. The ultimate team sport.

Those dudes you call fat are still extremely talented and strong, and quick for their size. Football doesnt really call for skinny dudes. You will get hurt without some bulk.

I agree. I don't think think baseball is boring. My friend who plays futbol thinks baseball is boring because he sees people standing around. Whereas I know there's a lot going on with signs and thoughts of the fielders when the ball is hit and who to back-up and what base to cover

Football is brutal. If it was an hour of straight play everyone would die. No doubt. You'd get tired as shit, make a mistake, fall, and get your neck run over with cleats. Not fun. I agree with the less is more shit.
