i hear sufis talk about islam should get away from extremism and go back to the way it was when it started, then i hear other muslims call sufis apostates and such and such, i think sufis are great, theyre peaceful people, and sufi saints such as bhagat kabir and sheikh farid are influential and major figures in my religion as well but im not too familiar with zaqqum.

    anyways those are my thoughts

I feel a well conditioned heart is key to freedom and peace plus spiritual progress toward oneness.

The parallels between this and the ESSEN(CE)sial message of the new testament are interesting.
"And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And whoso cometh unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, him will I baptize with fire and with the Holy Ghost(-or Allah presence)," (3 Nephi 9:20) and I guess truth approaches from that point. Being lead by a stronger force. Having a heart so pure it's ready to be taken up and you effortlessly carry out the will of Allah...an embodiment of Truth after ego is shattered through voluntary(and involuntary) inner jihad and change.

The "All-Knower of the unseen and seen, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise" (64:16) should be one's source of comfort, guidance and energy it seems. Through submision..honesty, acceptance, fasting, mourning..earnest willing and prayer etc.

    Peace.

Sufism is one of the 3 sciences of Islam after Jurisprudence (Law) and Creed. It deals with the purification of heart/soul from devilish and animalistic vices and its purpose is for the being to reach a state of controlling his ego rather than it controlling him. Nowadays Sufism is a broad term and even some non-Muslims claim to practice 'Sufism.' I choose to rely on certain places for my knowledge, and that is people who have a chain of authority going back to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, but that is personal preference. From personal experience I would recommend the works of:

    Shaykh Abdul-Qadir Jilani: http://www.al-baz.com/ourbooks_page4.shtml

The book 'Secret of Secrets' is fantastic.

    Shaykh Wali Raslan: http://www.amazon.com/Concerning-Aff.../dp/1882216059

"When you are with Him, He conceals you from you, and when you are with you He conceals you from Him..."

    Imam Ghazzali:

Any more info needed PM me,

P.S: not sure what you mean by Zaqqum - this sounds like the tree in Hell-Fire mentioned in the Qur'an!

    PEACE

I copied paste this from Sri Sri Shankar teachings ,,,

There are five secrets that are sacred and guarded by the subtle beings and angels in this creation.
    They are:
Janama Rahasya or the secret of birth: Birth is a secret. How a soul takes a body, and the criteria for selecting the place and time of birth, type of body, and parents are all a secret.

Marana Rahasya or the secret of death: Death is a highly guarded secret. Death remains a mystery. The process of separation of spirit from matter and its journey from then on is a secret.

Raja Rahasya or the secret of governance: The principles of governing and the principles of maintaining orderliness in creation are a secret.

Prakriti Rahasya or the secret of nature: Nature is a mystery. The more you know about nature, the more the mystery deepens. The more a scientist knows, the more he realizes there is to know. Science, though appearing to resolve the mystery in creation, has deepened it. Knowledge of particles, wave functions, black holes and the vacuum state have only deepened the mystery.

Mantra Rahasya (the secret of mantras): Mantras are the impulses or rhythms of consciousness. The mantras and their effect, influence, method and mode of working are all a mystery.
