Cool mate. I'll check out this stuff tomorrow hopefully. I'm no expert or anything. I just play and really love the instrument.
Lolz before I got into guitar I thought DB was pretty lame. Now it's the Floyd album I listen to most (albeit minus 3 tracks, which brings it down to the 45 odd minutes it should've been). Gilmour's best playing is on that album, as well as his 'On an Island' and 'Live in Gdansk' albums.
As for what makes a guitarist good to me, like I say I think touch is most important. Style. What you do with a note. How you go into and out of a note. One note played by David Gilmour is worth more than a full album of most flashy, super fast metal guitarists. Fuck that rubbish. I like guitarists who express something through their playing. Listen to 'Sweet Dreams' and 'The Messiah Will Come Again' by Roy Buchanan. He's expressing more with his guitar than almost anybody could through words. That's what I look for and what impresses me.
You don't have to play guitar or understand music to know who a good guitarist is. If you're connecting to their music then they're doing their job right.
