The cops killed a kid.
The french are constantly rioting about something though. If it wasn't this it would be something else.

video shows the cop was lying in his official statement. he shot a kid in a car that was not moving, while he had gone on record saying he shot the kid because the car was moving. IIRC. I haven't been keeping up with the news much lately.
Frustration with the economy, lack of opportunities and a general resentment of white French people.
The riots are mainly taking place in Marseille and cities with a considerable population of North Africans.
